Prince George, B.C. – So what’s up with the weather?
Environment Canada’s Jim Steele says while Prince George was close to breaking an overnight cold record, it fell short “The old record for March 10th was -33.3 set back in 1956, and we were -32.9.” In Mackenzie, the temperature dropped to -37 overnight.
“It’s not that we haven’t been in this territory before” says Steele, “It’s just that we don’t want to go there” Steele points to some previously cold March temps; in 2002, and again in 2003, temps dipped from -20 to -30 and on the 8th of March in 2003 it was -30.6. In 1976, there was one day in March the temperature plunged to -34.7. The coldest March day on record was March 24th in 1955 when it was -37.8!
Steele says we are victims of two cold bodies of water “There are colder than normal waters near the equator and colder than normal temperatures in the gulf of Alaska so it has more to do with ocean patterns than anything else.” Steele says its like the stock market “It’s all over the map.”
The good news? “It’s a beautiful sunny day today and tomorrow. The high tomorrow will be -11 and Thursday will see a high of -3 so that will almost seem balmy compared to this morning’s cold”.
For the long term, Steele says it looks like April and May will be “on the edge of colder than normal temperatures.”
