Tonight will be the final meeting of the existing City Council, and there are  some interesting items on the agenda.

There is a  request for a  zoning change that will allow the expansion of gaming in the down town.

The recommendation is for a Community Gaming Center to be located in a C-1 district. Council had moved earlier this year to examine the pros and cons of the move with opublic consultation.

Only 50 people have attended the public meetings and four submissions have been received two in favor of the plan, one from the PG Masters and Seniors Lacrosse Association, the other from the United Native Nations  which holds the second largest license at the present facility. In their comments, the United Native Nations says the facility will go a long way to boosting the face of the down town.

In another submission, the Multi Cultural Society says the BC Lotteries mandate is to generate revenue for the Provincial government and they ask that Council stipulate that amount of money going to charities not be reduced .

The only written negative comments came from Debora Munoz, newly elected Councilor.  She won't be sworn in until  December.  She has made it clear she does not want an increase in any sort of gambling in the city.

I cannot imagine WHY the people in this city fail to recognize the NEGATIVE impact gambling has on the economy and the forthcoming social consequences on the horizon.
How can residents in the north, or anywhere for that matter, be so damnable ignorant????
Just make sure there is more in it for Charities???? The detrimental effects of gambling do not matter-just make sure there is more money in it for charities.
The poor incensed gasmbler does not realize "charity begins at home." He becomes hell bent on destroying his home, and life, and the lives of those around him. (Could be a her).
Ten years ago it was touted far and wide that B C would have no part in legalized gambling. Even Albertans had respect for a province taking that stand.
What a turn around!!!!
The cash cow appears to be bloated with money and the benefactors are in line for the cow to be milked-and they all want lots of cream.
Insanity-plain and simple.
When it comes time to fully pay the price-remember we must all pay-not just the gambler.
What a stupid lot!!!!!
Owl. I have been lurking here for a while. I find your comments always well thought out and factual. Your comments are a pleasure to read unlike some others!!!
I have yet to hear of busloads of tourists showing up at the casino,we should be turning these gaming centres and casino's into tourist destinations,John Major should be offering places like Terrace ,Kitimat etc etc free bus tours into the city so these people can come here to gamble and shop then go home.To set these places up just so the people that cannot afford it have a place to lose is just not a reason to build it.
