Climate Change Will Mean "Dyer" Consequences

Prince George, B.C.- The keynote speaker at the annual Bob Ewert Memorial Lecture and dinner Saturday night, left many of the 550 guests at the event looking for some sort of silver lining to the  clouds of doom he delivered in his lecture.
Author and columnist, Gwynne Dyer spoke of global turbulence and wars , of billions of people dying because of a lack of food and water , the results of climate change.
According to Dyer, if the world’s average temperature rises by 2 degrees, there is no turning back, there will be nothing any person or government can do to stop the spiral that will bring on drought, crop failure and acidic oceans.
Dyer delivered four main points:
1.      Climate change is not only real, it is very big
2.      The Generals are right, as we get further into climate change, the global turbulence will multiply rapidly
3.      There is a point of no return, that if the global temperature rises 2 degrees, our efforts to cut emissions won't be enough
4.      There is a way to cheat that will buy some time, A: by spreading sulphur dioxide in the atmosphere to act as a sun screen, or B: by possibly seeding clouds with water droplets to further shield the earth from the sun’s rays.
Dyer says the scientific data which is being used by governments to plan their emission reduction plans is horribly out of date, and things are changing much faster than first thought.  He says the world’s temperature has already risen by .7 of a degree , and another .6 of a degree can be expected soon, so changes have to be made before a further .7 of a degree increase happens.
“It’s not about saving the planet” says Dyer, “It’s about saving ourselves and that should be motivation enough.”

There is something to be said for someone who can dive head first into the doom and gloom of the world and then sit down in a room with a few who have there hands over their butts in fear and make a living at it..
"A: by spreading sulphur dioxide in the atmosphere to act as a sun screen,..."

Sheer madness! Hasn't the man ever heard about the problem of acid rain and what causes it?

Another prediction I heard about global warming is that Prince George will receive more moisture (snow I assume). Probably another person will say not much will change and its only in everyone's head.
Ahhh….The sky is falling; lets put some chemicals in the air or help nature make rain. Let’s panic, but do nothing about polluting the land and oceans.
Was the story title's inclusion of Dyer consequences a deliberate wordplay at Gwynne Dyer's expense, or was it meant to say Dire? It's clever, anyway.
"sulphur dioxide"
We should be okay in PG, thats what the pulp mills spew out every day.

Go to China or India and tell them to stop polluting this planet....oh! I forgot they dont give a damn.
We must pay more carbon tax. Obviously these taxes aren't working at the present level. We must pay more. Or we are doomed. That is why we pay them, isn't it?
This has nothing to do with climate change??? but it does have something to do with saving something....rivers, salmon and a chemical called Slice. This has been a hot topic with a lot of posters here.

First thing about Gwynne Dyer is that he has war on his brain. He has a PhD in Military and Middle Eastern History, not in meteorology or environmental science. The second thing about Dr. Dyer is that he is very controversial. He makes for a lively speaker.

So, if you invite him to speak about something, it will always end up being a discussion about his expertise and love – war and social turbulence. Without that, he has no topic.

Is the world heating up? There seems no doubt. By definition, the evidence is that it is.

it caused by man? Maybe. Does it matter whether it is caused by humans or not? Not really.

Whether caused by man or some other cause, can we influence it? Not likely, at least not to the degree necessary to make a significant difference.

Is the method he describes plausible? Not likely, but hey, the guy picked the information up from some thinking out there I am sure, so don’t blame him from being the messenger. Just blame him for picking up the alarmist version. That is what he does. That is Gwynne Dyer. That is what he is paid for. You don’t want him to say that to a local audience? Don’t invite him to speak.

Did he offer another solution to coping with the climate change? I do not know. I do not attend such nonsense events. I can read it on the internet for nothing. However, from the article here and from having read and heard Dr. Dyer before, it would be unlike him to offer solutions that do not take one to conflicts and wars. To hear about non violent revolution solutions one would have to engage a completely different type of speaker.

All that being said, one must keep in mind that if one wishes to mitigate the possible consequences that this global warming period will have on the human societies that inhabit the earth during it, Dr. Dwyer’s prediction is plausible and we must do everything we can to avoid those types of consequences.

Finally, for all those people who talk about sustainability of this that and the other thing these days, it appears most still assume that the natural world around us never changes.
This Dyer fella would have recieved the pointed end of my boot if I had been there. Anyone with a bit of a brain, look up sulfer dioxide (so2) IT KILLS PEOPLE. This man is only out to make money, if he really cared about the climate he would be preaching to China and India. Taxes and throwing money to the government will not solve ANYTHING!
heidi1555 that video brought a tear to my eye. This video is full of misinformation from a special interest group. You have to understand that one cannot use one source for any type of information. That is where the internet is great, one can jump around and find information from many sources and piece the information together. Do not run with one source, especially biased mainstream media.

Slice use is very controlled and did you now it is also used with other livestock for different reasons. Farmed salmon do not introduce lice, lice is already in the environment. Also the vast majority of lice on wild stocks is a species rarely found on farmed salmon. These special interest groups always leave that interesting piece of information out. Closed containment will increase the production of greenhouse gases that everyone is worried about. Pink salmon numbers are highly variable from season to season. Some of the lowest numbers recorded where before farms and some of the highest numbers after farming was started. Be careful how special interest groups pick and choose their information on both sides .
Farmed salmon on the barbie is yum yum.

seamutt,
I can't imagine putting something in my mouth that has possibly shown to give other fish tumors and disgusting eye defects. (I imagine we all are in some form without knowing it) I sure hope that bbq kills the chemicals.
For your sake and just in case (you never know) I hope your bbq mysteriously disappears. :(
From what this special interest group is finding makes me listen and pay attention....I'll get my omega3 from other sources. Risk cancer or prevent it??? While the studies are continuing I'll stay away from the risk.

“Do Not Use Near Waterways.”

"Polluting the Sea
Consider the problem of sea lice, which are endemic to large-scale salmon farms. To control this parasite,
operators of salmon farms use either cypermethrin, teflubenzuron, emamectin, or azamethiphos. All are
classified as ‘marine pollutants,’"

Gus right on about Dyer, you nailed it.

Now this climate change thing. The earth has been much warmer in the past than present. C02 levels have been much much higher in the past than present. C02 levels today are actually lower than the historic normal. We are constantly being told we are nearing a level of C02 called the tipping point after which will cause an uncontrolled temperature rise from the green house effect. This predicted tipping point has in the past, been exceeded by a very large amount. What happened to the uncontrolled temperature rise then? How did the C02 and temperature levels of the past decline again after exceeding the C02 tipping level. Climatic variations are natural, driven by the sun. Mans contribution over natural C02 level is something like 4% of total atmospheric C02. That 4% is going to make an undetectable change lost in the natural temperature variability.
Notice how those that believe in anthropogenic global warming (AGW) have dropped the term global warming and now use climate change. Why because the computer modeled global warming is not cooperating with real world observations. The temperature rise since 1975 flatlined in 1998 and has shown a declining trend since 2003. The much exalted computer models never predicted that. Oh I might add that in the early 70's scientists and headlines where predicting an oncoming ice age.

Yes the earth has been warming since the end of the last little ice age, .5 degrees average per hundred years and that has not changed. Yes sea levels also have been rising about 13 inches per hundred years. And notice this all was happening long before man started having if any influence. For the last five years sea levels stopped rising and are showing a slight downward trend, satellite readings.

C02 is not a pollutant, plants need it to grow. Civilizations flourished during periods of high temperature and declined during periods of lower temperature. Take away C02 and watch what happens. Yes lets protect our environment but wasting trillions chasing C02 is a big mistake. That is taking away money from real environmental concerns.

Why does Al Gore who is so concerned about saving mother earth that he charges over one hundred grand per speech and will not debate. Makes millions promoting this global warming scam, has a 150 foot yacht, flies the world in his jet. Lives in a 30,000 sq. ft. mansion, is so worried about sealevel rise he just bought a luxury condo on the San Fransisco waterfront.

Anybody smell a scam.
heidi1555 have you ever been on a fish farm, I have, looked fine to me, some issues but very little over all. They are more heavily regulated than any other form of agriculture. Ever been to a cattle, pig or chicken operation? That could make you give up meat altogether. Ever been to a crop farm and seen how the natural land is disturbed, chemicals used. There is no easy answer to any source of food.
Another climate change televangelist. Give me money and I'll exorcise the demon CO2 from your planet and throw in a free bottle of snake oil.
Good one gamblor.
Study the history of the planet, study the history of the area. This area we live in was covered in 3 miles thick of ice glaciers just 15,000 years ago. A mere pin prick in the earth's history.

Also, I would like to see fish farms moved inland to self-contained operations.

Like was said earlier, ever see the concentration of filth and excrement when you keep many animals together in one place in a commercial operation (beef, pork, chicken) ?
...so the world must stay the same way it was 15,000 years ago? Where's the logic in that???

The big commercial farms use that excrement as fertilizer - its natures way you know. Stop hyperventilating and realize its not nearly as bad as you'd like to think.
I feel sorry for the 550 people who paid hard earned money to listen to a pervayer of doom and gloom such as Gwyn Dyer. As well, Opinion 250 should not be reporting this kind of crap, especially while other media are doing the same thing.

No wonder people depressed. Lets hear some good news for a change.
Here we go, leading people through the story by the hand again....

"...so the world must stay the same way it was 15,000 years ago? Where's the logic in that???"

My point was that such a drastic change in a short time, was definitely not caused by man. The earth cycles itself more or less without our involvement or management. My point was that the earth is still returning to it's natural hot and humid state from an ice age state. Some say global warming is accelerated by man, I think such a drastic change in 15,000 years without man's involvement, is already an accelerated state of warming.

"The big commercial farms use that excrement as fertilizer - its natures way you know."

They produce so much more than what they can use that it has an enormous impact on the immediate area. A little bit of fertilizer is good. Several tons of it a week is difficult to manage, impossible to contain, pollutes the groundwater, burns the soil, is unhealthy for the animals, etc. The same thing happens with people. Millions of people concentrated in a city produce a lot of pollution concentrated in a small area.

Now stop hyperventilating and do some reading.
you've obviously never been to a farm and your schpeel on climate is pure speculation. Stop talking about things you know nothing about.
You first.
:-p
Did you know?
(Livestock pollution and public health)

"* California officials identify agriculture, including cows, as the major source of nitrate pollution in more than 100,000 square miles of polluted groundwater."

and.....

Here's a short and sweet video......

Mobile fish farms could soon navigate the oceans:

I do not know or really WANT to care about all the doom and gloom. I try to stay in my little world where I can control most things. I do know for a fact that I will never eat farmed salmon. I smoke salmon and was given some farmed salmon to smoke for a friend. First off, it was in the smoker for three days and still was not dry enough. I put it in my dehydrator for another day and it was still soft. Anyway to make a long story short I bagged it and put it in the fridge for my friend who picked it up the next day. At the bottom of every bag was 1" of greese. EWWWWWW! They can have it.
