PRINCE GEORGE - A $2.2 million contribution from the Province to the Prince George school district will support an innovative partnership with the city to build a new recreational complex and make land available for a proposed Canadian Cancer Society lodge, Minister of Education Shirley Bond announced today.
"When partnerships come together with a single goal in mind creative and innovative ideas are developed. This partnership has resulted in not only a new park space for the community, but also a much-needed cancer lodge to support cancer patients and their families in northern B.C.," said Education Minister Shirley Bond. "The Province's $2.2 million compensates the school district for the land that will be turned into community park space and enables the city to make its land available for the proposed cancer society lodge."
Under the memorandum of understanding, the school district intends to transfer ownership of 3.26 hectares of land at the Duchess Park Secondary site to the city.
"The city will develop and maintain this for recreational purposes which could include playing fields, tennis courts, an off-leash park and a playground,"The cancer lodge to be built on the Alward Park site will complement the recently-announced BC Cancer Agency Centre for the North, to be built adjacent to the Prince George Regional Hospital. The lodge will provide meals and accommodation at a modest rate for out-of-town patients and their families, and will have a 24-hour nurse supervisor on staff.
