Mayor Jeanette Townsend of Valemount says she hopes that a nearby mountain to Twin Peaks as they are known locally will be re named after former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau by next spring. The mountain range was set aside some time ago to honor Premiers and Prime ministers. Townsend says the community has lobbied for three years to have the mountain re named.

I find this upsetting. Clearly no other Canadian Prime Minister has had such disdain for this Province. He even gave the people of this province his famous Trudeau wave as his train went by without stopping near the very spot Jeanette Townsend wants to name a mountain after him.

The man never lived in BC, and did nothing for BC as a politician. Not only that but he never as Prime Minster ever visited Northern BC, so why should he be honored with a mountain in our presence? Why not find a swamp in Quebec to name after him?

I remember past federal elections where Jeanette Townsend couldn’t even get 10% of the vote running under the federal liberal banner. After she lost the election she insulted the whole North by saying that if we will not vote for the federal liberals (ie Jeanette Townsend), then this region could expect suffer under a federal liberal government, and the North can’t expect any federal dollars for this region.

It was a malicious attack on democracy that I will never forget, and so it only seems appropriate that she would be the one that wants to honor someone of like mind in our own backyard.

Clearly this is another desperate attempt by the liberals through Jeanette Townsend to create a political issue before the election that they can manipulate for electioneering purposes. ie The ‘Us against them’ routine back east.

I find it insulting
Boy did you hit the nail on the head with your post. Couldn't agree more. What the heii is it with our mountains that we have to suffer these idiots. Name some canoe after the guy and leave us in peace,
I too, am amazed at how inappropriate this gesture is, especially for BC.

So soon we forget the treatment we received from Mr. Pierre Elliot Trudeau. We can and should forgive him, and we also should show him Grace, but, we don't have to go to such lengths as to rename a mountain after him.

Common folks, surely there can't be that much support besides the Mayor of Valemount who feels such an obligation to do this? Chester
Give me a break! Next thing you know, they'll be naming a mountain after Campbell just to remind us how screwed we get.
This does not just border the ridiculous-this is absolutely obscene.
Naming a mountain after Pierre Eeliot Trudeau in British Columbia is such an insult to the average citizen in B.C. that Townsend best hope this is not held against her in a forthcoming election.
Downright insult, and that really is saying the least.
It's kind of odd that the Civil Servants want to put the Trudeau name in some quiet out of the way place. The people of Ontario should be demanding the CN tower be renamed the Trudeau Finger. Now that would stir up a pop storm, but the name would be closer to the people that kept him in power. Surely not everyone hates the batsard in Toronto, unlike in the West where he will get 10 closed fingers.
I think they should have picked a mountain in Alberta .... ;-)

I'd be willing to bet on two things.

#1 I bet Jeanette Townsend didn't even raise this isssue in the municipal election last week. Convenient how she announced the Trudeau insult after the election.

#2 Also convenient how before the election the city of Valemount was abuze with word that the federal government would secure funding for a gondola on that very mountain if Jeanette Townsend was elected (no mention of the name change though, only the funding).

I guess Jeanette Townsend was right when she said after the previous federal election she lost that Prince Goerge could expect nothing for not electing her, and only Valemount would see money from a liberal government.
So, if we want to see money for a Yellowhead interprovincial highway bypass of the City from the airport to connect south of College Heights, then we need to elect Dan Rogers as our new Liberal MP ..... ;-)
OWL, you are a poop disturber, but a sharp one! What announcement do you guess Dan might hold back until after the election?
I seem to recall Jeannette saying she was a liberal a few years back. Ya know--it seems to me we would all do well to join the political party who attains the power. That way you have some sort of say about what goes on. When you join the opposition, you really waste your effot as they can basically do nothing for you..Let's face it--you don't have to like or agree with the party you join. My father was a wise man; he wouldn't lie to me.
YamaDooPolCat .... I might be sharp on occasion, but do not have the faintest clue waht you are referring to if it is meant to be after the federal election .......

Maybe he will get appointed to the National Capital Commission and get free trips to Ottawa .....
