Spirit of BC Communities Committee has outlined the details of the Winter Opportunities Summit set to take place in Prince George from the 9-11th of February.
Several workshops are planned, including a Spirit of BC Community Committee roundtable with 2010 Legacies Now,
- Session on Oil and Gas Business Development Opportunities
-Developing media strategies outside Vancouver/Whistler
-Business development through public purchasing, partnerships and the 2010 Games
The Summit will be called "Lighting Your Flame Through Sport, Business and Tourism" and will feature a presentation from Susan Auch, three time Olympic Canadian Speedskating Medalist.
With more than 30 speakers lined up, and 20 sessions planned, this Summit is much larger than the first one held a year ago.
The organizers hope to tap into the energy of the Torino games by carrying some of the events live during the summit, but there won't be any jumbotron at the Civic Centre, or at CN Centre for that matter. Mayor Colin Kinsley says while it would have been nice to have a big event at CN Centre with a jumbotron to catch the opening ceremonies, "We won't move ahead until we have the funding for that item and I understand it takes 5-6 months lead time to order and install that sort of thing."
About 250 delegates are expected to attend . The focus this year will be to provide information and promote the region, not just for the 2010, but to use the Games as a catalyst to increase business and tourism for the whole region.
The budget for the Summit is more than $100,000 and 75% of that is covered through sponsorships. Organizers believe the balance will be made up through registrations and will leave the Committee in a break even situation..
The planned trip to Torino will also be up for discussion.
A special website has been developed for the summit. More information is available at www.wintersummit.ca

How can partnering in name only with the Olympic event 800km away in Vancouver provide tourism let alone lasting tourism opportunities for PG?
If PG wants to have tourists opportunities we have to fly under our own banner with our own slogans to bring the tourists here and ensure that in all fairness government promotion for tourism in the year 2010 is promotion for tourism in all parts of the Province and not just the Lower Mainland.
IMO provinical promotion of tourism in 2010 should cover the whole year and the whole province and not be solely tied to the Olympics.
The Olympics should be viewed as a large international event that is the main attraction among many for tourists that want to visit BC in the year 2010.
To say that any benefits from tourism in the year 2010 have to be in conjuntion with the Olympics is a defeatist attitude for this region to take IMO. I'd like to see us stand tall on our own merrits with confidence and see the Olympics as competition that creates win-win opportunities through the efforts of both independently.
If we allow the lagacy of the Olympics in 2010 in BC to be influenced by VANOC then we will get nothing more then we got from Expo 86.
