Prince George, BC – The Prince George Cougars have hired a new coach. Dean Clark will be the hockey club’s ninth head coach, heading into the Cougars 16th Western Hockey League season in Prince George.

Clark agreed to terms on a five year contract and takes over for Wade Klippenstein, who will retain his position as Assistant General Manager of the Cougars. Clark brings with him an impressive resume as a head coach in the WHL, compiling a 382-253-61 record in 12 seasons behind the benches of Calgary (1996-2001), Brandon (2001-2003) and Kamloops (2003-2007). After earning CHL Coach of the Year honors in 1998, Clark became a WHL champion the following season after guiding the Hitmen to the top record in the WHL during the 1998-99 regular season.  Calgary went 16-5 in the ’99 WHL playoffs, en route to a berth in the Memorial Cup. The Hitmen were a win away from the Memorial Cup crown, but lost to the host Ottawa 67’s in the final, 7-6 in overtime. On the international scene, Clark earned a bronze medal as an Assistant Coach for Canada’s World Junior Hockey squad in 2000. Clark’s 382 wins is 12th most in WHL history and Clark is ranked 6th all-time in WHL playoff wins with 61.

“I’m really excited about the opportunity to come to Prince George to continue my coaching career.” Says Clark, “Having known Rick Brodsky and Dallas Thompson previously and seeing the character those two men bring to the organization makes me very excited about joining the Cougars, especially to a team that is on the rise with the amount of young talent it has.”

“Dean’s successes speak for themselves” says Cougars General Manager Dallas Thompson, “We’re extremely happy and excited about bringing Dean to our organization and adding stability to the coaching staff.”

“This is a giant step forward for our organization” states Cougars President Rick Brodsky “With Dean behind the bench, we foresee great things for the organization and the city of Prince George. With the group of kids we have and our younger prospects, Dean is exactly what we were looking for.”

“I’ve had the opportunity to coach in Prince George when the CN Centre was probably the toughest building in the WHL to play in for visiting teams,” adds Clark, “In the WHL, things have a way of coming around again and I look forward to getting back to those days when the building was full and teams had a tough time facing the Cougars in Prince George.”

Dean, who is married to wife Darilyn, is expected to arrive in Prince George in the first week of August

I really feel for the team,
new coach and nothing else has changed.
and I don't forsee anything changing unfortunately...
until they do something at the very top.
Good luck guys , I relly think you are going to need it.
Don't know if he can help the team, but I bet he can't hurt the team. I sincerely hope that upper level Cougars management will allow this team to flourish, at last.
metalman.
even if they are allowed to serve beer at the games, the cougars are still losers and losers do not attract supporters.
I do not mean the colloquial term loser, rather I mean that they do not win many games as evidenced by their participation in the league playoffs, or should I say their lack of.
Interesting choice. Hasn't been in the league since 1997 after being canned by the Blazers after 5 seasons I believe and an incredible 0-16 playoff record (yes that was 4 years in the playoffs without winning a game).

He did have some success with Calgary, but those teams were also pretty stacked. His time in Kamloops was full of turmoil, although in fairness, much of that was out of his control. If I'm not mistaken, he was there when all of the money theft was going on with one of the employees of the Blazers and that resulted in a tough situation for the organization all around.

It will be interesting to see how it turns out. Maybe the dual GM/coach role was too much for him to handle and he would be better off as coach. Mind you, he has to have the flexibility and be given the freedom to do the job and that is always a question in Cougarville.

I can't see this resulting in a surge of season ticket holders but the 5 year contract is a bonus. Now let's see if they get a 5 year lease deal with the City. That is the more interesting question IMHO . . .
Maybe they (dallas thompson and brodsky) got a deal.

Another scapegoat.
Seems to me that Brodsky stated in 2007/2008 that he needed attendence to be at 3000 fans per game in order to make any money.

The average attendence per game for 2008/2009 was 2500. This means that Brodsky is experiencing a significant loss, or his original statement was incorrect. If in fact they are not making any money then why do they stay????. Maybe nobody wants the team.

I suggest that even if the team starts to win, they will have a hard time getting anymore fans, mainly because there are none. All the soft fans have left, and they wont be back.

Contrary to popular opinion, hockey is boring to most people. A very small percentage of the population actually like the game.
You have a point Palopu, 2500 in attendance,I doubt that all are hard core fans, and the population of PG is about 78,000....definitely a very small percentage of the overall population. So could be boring. I think it very overrated, but have no problem if others love it....
Will this "new" coach improve things, or is he the next in a line of scapegoats? Good question. And I am not going to judge the man but as time goes on we shall see if he is the great coach or not.
Nothing will happen if Brodsky owns the team. It really pisses me off when I see teams that came into the league after the Cougars moved up here succeed. I don't understand why Bordsky can't spend the money and hire a managment team who will build a team and put the butts back in the seats.

MR. BRODSKY.....SELL THE TEAM, PLEASE!!!
