Northern Health and BC Housing will work together to find another site to develop new assisted living units for seniors in the South Peace region. Assisted living units provide specialized housing, meals, support services, health services, and 24 hour response to help seniors who can direct their own care and live independently.
An architectural and engineering review has found that the plan to convert the Peace River Haven Intermediate Care Facility into an assisted living complex is not feasible. This is due to high costs associated with upgrading the facility to provide assisted living units.
Northern Health and BC Housing remain committed to adding new assisted living units to serve seniors in the South Peace region. Both agencies will examine alternate sites to find a suitable location for the development of assisted living units.
In addition, the number of assisted living units allocated to the South Peace has been increased to 26, up from 22. This means the new assisted living development will have 26 assisted living units. It is hoped a new site for this development can be identified by the end of the year.
Northern Health will continue to operate the intermediate care beds at Peace River Haven for the immediate future. Approximately 20 residents are living in Peace River Haven. Residents currently receiving supportive services at Southview in Dawson Creek through the Dawson Creek Society for Community Living will continue to receive their support services at Southview.
