Naomi Manning takes the Oath of Office at District 57's Inaugural Session

26-year-old Naomi Manning took her place on School District 57's Board of Trustees last night, after being officially sworn in...

The UNBC student says she's been busy learning the ropes at the District office, since the election.  "We're meeting with the heads of various departments and they're just going over some of the basics of how their departments work and what the big issues are currently."

The big issues for Manning?  "Well, funding is something, I mean I think there are allocation issues, some of the money isn't allocated the way that I, personally, think would be most efficient."  But, she says, "I think most of all, they're lacking funding."  And Manning points out that's not an internal problem, but rather an external one involving the provincial government and she sees it as the Board's role to demand more money.

Manning admits there will, in all likelihood, be a gap between what she hopes to accomplish and what can be, "I think that's a given and I knew that during the campaign."

"But I think a lot of the things that I intend to do are possible and we've got a great team -- I like the people that I'm going to be working with here and I think we're going to be able to work together and make some changes."

Manning is hopeful she'll be selected to sit on the District's Aboriginal Education Committee, saying the high drop out rate among the aboriginal student population is alarming and an area that needs a lot of attention.

Congradulations to Naomi! It's really good to see young people involved politically like this. We need the eyes, the ears, the emotions and feelings of the young to keep the past generations in tune with the present and help plan the future.
