Two new homes go up side by side in the Hart

New housing starts in Prince George in the first 11 months of 2005 are up considerably over the same period last year.

Carol Frketich, with the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, says the number of single-detached homes being built in the city is up 50-percent over 2004.

Frketich says, in November alone, there were 31 starts, compared to 12 in 2004.  "I think it does reflect on improvement in the economy, it also reflects the low interest rates and consumer confidence."

"I visited Prince George in June," says the Vancouver-based CMHC Spokesperson, "And I noticed quite a change in people's attitudes and feelings and how enthusiastic they were in the community."

Frketich says multiple-unit starts are not coming on as strong this year, but says they tend to fluctuate.  She points out that just one development in a city the size of Prince George can skew the numbers.  "And that's what happened last year, there was a large building started that had 128 units."  This year, there have been 25 multi-family units built locally.

CMHC is planning to release a rental market survey mid-month that will look at vacancy rates and rents for the area.

Housing starts up!!
Resident count down!!!
More buildings for fewer people???
I recall when Prince George was a thriving busy city.
Nobody was afraid to go downtown.
People actually enjoyed life in this city.
What has gone so very wrong???
Now we have a downtown that people are very ashamed of.
It will not be revitalized-it is an impossible task, and the investment dollars would be astronomical.
How can it be expected that the mess that was allowed to be created can become a vital area the residents can be proud of???
Almost like trying to make a "silk purse out of a sow's ear."
Will the powers that be at city hall make that attempt???
Remember-"Fools walk in where angels fear to tread."
Maybe downtown Prince George is comparable to the East end of Vancouver??
Would it be better to write it off-no more studies, no more committees??
Oops-NO MORE TAXES?? or
surely LESS.
BIG DRAWBACK THERE!!!!!
