Crime Stoppers President Roberta Stewart and Vice President Chuck Hardy have appeared before Fraser Fort George Regional District to ask for a grant to hire a full time coordinator. Funding has become a major challenge as revenue that used to come from bingo gaming is no longer available.
Stewart says that economic growth will also mean an increase in criminal activity throughout the region. While there is a co-ordinator, that post is currently held by an RCMP officer who does double duty as the media liason. That means the coordinator spends 90% of the time dealing with media, and just 10% of the time dedicated to Crime Stoppers
If a full time coordinator can be hired, the program could be expanded to McKenzie and McBride.
Stewart says $63,000.00 is enough to hire a full time dedicated coordinator. She says it is an essential service linked with successful police investigation and crime prevention. Crime Stoppers in Prince George has been a direct factor in recovering more than $2 million dollars in stolen goods and $16 million dollars in drugs.
The request has been put forth as a budget consideration for 2006.

The next necessary step, in my opinion, is to begin to deal with the criminals in a more effective way.
The community can do their part, the RCMP can do their part. But, if the Judges and the judicial system continue to fail us, what is going to change?
It's time to either change those who are in positions who deal with criminals or change the way these people are behaving.
What we are doing is not effective enough. What we are doing is not providing any deterent for the criminals. What we are doing is costing us a fortune. What we are doing is not helping the victims of the crimes. It's time for the bad guys to go to work for the good guys. Hard labour for the good of our community. Surely to goodness that there is much that could be done to improve PG that a little elbow grease would improve.
It's time for a change. Someone has been responsible for the results we are experiencing. It's time for a change. It's time to step up and be heard. Your voice is important. How do you really feel?Chester
