Isnt Western Thermal the ones that came in at double or triple thier bid on the Columbus demolition?
Shame to loose the Bamboo House, the unique roof line has been a landmark downtown for as long as I have lived here.

I must say I was never too impressed with the the food at the Outrigger, but the decore was nice. The Bamboo house was a jem, with great food, shame it shut down.
Wait till you see the new restaurant that is going in there.
Low bidder = salvage value.
There is a lot of re-usable products in both buildings, re-saleable, if you know where to market them. It is a shame to lose the old Outrigger, it was a very unique building when it was built, you have to admire anyone with the guts and foresight to build something so odd in a town where the sawmill business was the main economy at the time. The pulp mills were just emerging at the time as I recall. I think that the old Outrigger is far more deserving of 'heritage status' than the the PG Hotel.

Shame!
Gus, what new restaurant is going in there?
price of demolition + costs for asbestos removal and disposal I would think... who knows how much hazardous material in in those buildings..
Get it gone....

Gus is bs'ing again. :-) It's gonna be an open air, byob lounge.
Sad to see the bamboo building gone
That's a good one EBS&L! I would agree that the hidden costs ( undiscovered asbestos for example ) could drive up the final price for demolition, but that is the system that the city is a slave to; the lowest price is the law! (make it up in extras)

The hollow bamboo is stuffed with asbestos to make it almost fireproof. That is why it did not burn all these years.

They are getting rid of the bars, one after another, and replacing them with Hooters and other such restaurants. Can't afford a public cultural district.
I'd be willing to bet that a Hooter's Restaurant would be more populated than a PAC would, and it wouldn't cost us anything.
What new restaurant is going in there someone asked? Well, after watching that guy on Diners, drive ins, and dives, rest assured we will not be getting any places like that. Mom and pop outlets with no concept of portion controls. Instead, it will be a franchise. Or another Chinese restaurant or a non franchise pizza joint. Apparently our banks don't like hard working free enterprisers starting up their own restaurants. Just safe and finance easy franchises. We are different from them Yanks. Maybe thinner too?
Harbinger & others:

Opening a new restaurant is a risky and expensive proposition. We have seen more than a few independent "concept" eateries fail here.

That is not exclusively a Prince George issue. One banker I spoke with (in another city and years ago) said that it is the third owner of a restaurant that makes a go of it. The first owner cannot pay for all the pricey kitchen and other equipment. The second owner buys that at 50 cents on the dollar and still can't make it pay. The third owner buys it at half of that and can actually afford the payments.

That is why most new restaurants are franchises.
"the hollow bamboo is stuffed with asbestos to make it almost fire proof. That is why it did not burn all these years" Gimme a break, gus.
Think it through. The bamboo is still combustible. If, if, it is stuffed with asbestos, that means the stuffing won't burn. The bamboo will still burn.
HECK! you got me, gus. You are not actually serious, you are slyly attempting to foment dissent amoung the masses. By suggesting that the walls are insulated with asbestos, you hope to stir up furious debate, well, it worked. I for one, fell for your sneaky ruse.
