School District 57 plans to hire 12 teachers this month with an eye to reducing class sizes for the second semester.

In early December, the district received an additional $544,645.00 to specifically target class size (click here for earlier story).  And Superintendent, Dick Chambers, says 10.5 teachers will be hired for secondary schools, the remaining 1.5 positions will assist in helping with special education at the elementary level.  Chambers says the specific breakdown was determined after "good consultations" with the local teachers' association and district principals.

Chambers admits it's nice to be in the position to be hiring teachers.  He says the year started off well, too, with more teachers this year than last, despite a decline in enrolment of approximately 400 students.

As for a looming shortage of school administrators that's being predicted province-wide, Chambers says District 57 is well-positioned thanks to an "in-house" mentoring program designed to encourage those who want to make the leap from teaching to being a vice-principal or principal.

The superintendent says in the last few years, between six and eight administrator vacancies have popped up annually and most positions have been filled internally.  He says this year's openings will be posted province-wide because, "it's a good blend to get a bit of external perspective, have some new ideas come in."
