Hartley Miller's Slap Shots June 10, 2005
--Keep the beer out of the Multiplex (okay if you insist) the CN Centre. You can see I want my cup half empty on this issue. City Council will decide if it wants to listen to the Yahoos who are trying to push for it. I don't care if most of the other arenas have beer available, Prince George doesn't need it.
It's time for the Councilors to show some leadership and reject the idea. Get the cash grab from some place else. I realize going to the Cougar games can be a snooze and isn't what it used to be. But fans aren't staying away because of a lack of beer, but rather a lack of wins.
Prince George is a very young community, thus the age of the crowd could create more alcohol problems.
Family night at the rink doesn't mean booze night. There's lots of opportunity to drown your sorrows at plenty of places afterward.
Regardless if you want to give it an experiment or not, think of this; John Doe is attending a Cougar game. Before arriving, he had a few beer in his system; then at the game, he has a few more. After the game, while driving under the influence, he gets out of the congested parking lot and slams into your vehicle, not just causing serious damage to the car, but more importantly to those of you inside. Not going to happen you say or that scenario is over dramatic? All it takes is once.
--What's the hold up in the naming of the UNBC women's basketball coach ? Loralyn Murdoch has taken a one-year leave of absence from the job to pursue her level four coaching certification at the University of Victoria. The season has been over three months and the hiring committee knew well before, that Murdoch was going to the island to upgrade her education. It just so happens that Murdoch is on the hiring committee as well as UNBC Athletics and Recreation Co-ordinator Len McNamara and, of course, a basketball guru or two from the University's Human Resources.
I realize there's plenty of protocol to go through, but wasting this much time is ridiculous with off season recruiting critical at this point of the year.
Prospective players want to know who they would be playing for if they decide Prince George is the place for them.
Four applied for the position: two local and two from out of town. It has appeared obvious to me since the opening became available, that the job would go to Dave Holmes, Loralyn's assistant last season. I don't believe anything has come up to change that view. So, let's get on with things and make it official. After all, the naming of a new Pope was done in less one-third of the time.
--Richard M. Nixon sunk a hole-in-one a day after the world found out the identity of Deep Throat. That M is for Mark and not Milhous. He's a 27-year-old Gym teacher who scored the ace at the Spencer T. Olin golf course in Alton, Ill.
No word as to whether Alexander (I'm in charge) Haig was the caddy.
--If you have tried your hand at talking in front of the public, I'm sure you will be able to relate to this one.
Bud Greenspan, Olympic cinematographer, told the Los Angeles Times he once showed up for a public speaking engagement where there was only one person in attendance.
Figuring he'd already been paid to do it, Greenspan gave his speech, and the one-man audience hung on every word, even clapping and laughing.
"Afterward, I said to the man, 'Come on, I'll buy you a drink.' "And he said, 'I'm sorry, I can't. I'm the next speaker.' "
And, how is your week ?

So, setting aside the ridiculous notion of an unruly alcoholic mob destroying the city...lets take a look at the marketing and financial. Hmmmm...if it is being done everywhere else, junior and major...how can you think we are different? This is a huge revenue generator not to mention an additional draw for hockey fans. Can you imagine a NHL game that didnt serve alcohol? I agree that winning or getting on track to winning is a big concern for fan support here, but making a stand on a No-alcohol policy for a hockey game? How stupid does that sound. Beer and hockey are a Canadian staple that go together! Let them serve it...let them charge high prices for it...Let the city join the rest of Canada..and let this issue go.
