Prince George, B.C.-  People  using  ATVs in and around Prince George  should consider themselves warned.  The Prince George RCMP and Prince George City Bylaws are receiving a higher call volume regarding ATVs this year and will be making  ATV safety a priority.

Police advise that the average complaint regarding ATVs and quads stems from the lack of courtesy and lack of safety in the Prince George area.

While most ATV enthusiasts follow the rules of the road and stay safe while having fun in the proper designated areas around Prince George, the complaints are coming  about those who are showing a lack of ourtesy and safety.

The concerns that are being raised range from frustration at the incessant noise in the back woods to dangerous riding through public roads and walkways. ATV noise during the afternoon or early evening is not considered inappropriate but when riders are speeding through public roadways in order to get to their riding destination, or are riding under the influence of drugs or alcohol it becomes very dangerous and police are concerned that someone could get seriously injured or die as a result of a preventable accident.

Police are reminding the Public of the following rules and safety regulations:

· ATVs are prohibited from using public roads, parks, and trails.
· Riders should be courteous and respectful of neighbors, and others using the area.
· Speeds should be kept under control for everyone’s safety.
· ATVs should have proper functioning mufflers to control the noise.
· Riders should always wear a helmet.
** Riders should never operate an ATV while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.**

There are so many people, especially teenagers where I live who ride their dirtbikes and atvs down the public roads at high speeds, with no regards to the people who live in the neighborhood and the safety of people walking down the street. I have no issues with people riding their dirtbikes or atvs down the street if they ride slow and are courteous to the right of way traffic and people walking down the street. It really only takes a few to ruin it for everyone.
Police should patrol the Dawson Road, Eden Drive area more often. It is frequently used by ATVs, dirt bikes and in the winter, snowmobiles. There is no indication of responsible behaviour and the noise and speed are extremely excessive. There is definitely no consideration for the local tax-paying residents.
Ha ha ha . It is to laugh. I just happen to live on a street west of town and night after night of ATVs and dirt bikes being noisily ridden constantly up and down the street I phoned the cops. I described the situation to the dame who answered the phone and she was more interested about me than the scofflaws. She probably didn't like my tone either. I stated that if it was a slow day and the cops could tear themselves away from Tim's , and maybe they could drive by in my neighbourhood once in a while. Like everything else in this country, it's only against the law if you get caught.
Hmmmmm ... it seems I just made a post about about police and city bylaws having to enforce existing laws if they want the incidents to be reduced ........

It just needs a few too many for that to sink in every now and then.
My concern is the fire hazard. As they race by on the trails, especially in the recent heat, I just cross my fingers & hope they don't start a fire in the dead pine next to my house.
I live in that area too Honestjoe, and there as got to be something done with all the reckless kids on ATV'S up here...They drive down these streets like they don't have a frigging care in the world!
I don't mind them riding down the street as long as they are doing the speed limit and keep noise to a minimum. We have the odd one out here who likes to make as much noise as they can and go just as fast as they can. Generally most are pretty good.
We live on the northern edge of town and our dirt road is part of a circuit used by ATVs, dirt bikes and snowmobiles (in season), none of them registered nor insured. These people ignore the rules of the road, the most basic being that uninsured vehicles are not allowed on public roads.
We have complained to the police and they have sent officers to attend when crime downtown is minimal. They cannot apprehend these vehicles when they take off cross-country. The last incident saw four miscreants give an officer the finger before racing off through a field.
There are two obvious hazards involved here. The first is the danger of accidents. The second is that of vigilante action by citizens frustrated by inability of police to stop these obnoxious individuals. One neighbour suggested that he might shoot at a persistent ATV rider.
Can't the police use ambushes and spike belts to apprehend fleeing riders? The alternative is violence.
if they are on your property get some rock salt for your rifel and shoot em it will hurt like hell and be a great deterant.
the farmers on the island do it to keep kids from picking magic mushrooms in their feilds...
maybe a little hard core but effective
Why don't we all drive our Cars without Insurance saves 1000 Dollars plus and on the Subject if little Mike runs into my Car with his ATV, Bike who pays for it ?
We should give police the right to use lethal force to stop fleeing subjects, then equipped the cars with proper 50 cal sniper rifles, and proper training for the officers.

Perhaps a few apache helicopters that can be used to stop subjects fleeing in cars, trucks, hell they could even stop someone fleeing in a tank!

We would either, not have as much trouble catching them, or else we would have a whole lot less repeat offenders.

Ok perhaps I am talking a little tongue in cheek, but . . . wow that sounds like a win-win!

Real shame that the media, justice system, and politicians are a whole lot more concerned about the rights of criminals, than they are concerned about the rights of law abiding citizens who are subjected to become victims of crime.

To a degree it is our own fault, we teach our children that it is ok to break the law. Every day, they see us commit crimes like speeding (just the 10-20 km/hr you are allowed), pirating movies, or jaywalking. Although we think of things like this as harmless, it creates a fuzzy line in the minds of our children on whether laws need to be obeyed. I know others establish that line further over by exhibiting even worse behavior than my own (Drugs, Assault etc) in front of their children.

We compound that when we complain about the police, when they enforce the law, on us “rotten speeding tickets what a bunch of crooks”. The media does a good job of painting the police as a corrupt and violent gang with a reputation less savory than the Hells Angels, and we do little to make sure that our children do not pick up that message. Not saying that there are not a few bad apples in the barrel, but in an organization that has to number in the hundreds of thousands, I doubt that could be prevented.

By large I have found the police to be good and honest people. Yes, I am none too pleased when I received speeding tickets, but have never found the officers to be anything but courteous, they are just doing their job. My other run it with them should have resulted in me ending up in the drunk tank for the night, but I was respectful, and polite, and they obviously decided that I was not a risk to do anything more than perhaps pass out in someone’s front yard, and let me continue walking home.

I try to set a good example for my children by obeying the law, and respecting the police, but I know at times I fail, but overall hope the message comes across.

Now I have said my two cents worth.
wow has anybody ever been young? or are you all saints ?
I had an unlicenced dirt bike bolt out of the ditch and run into my passenger door. 2500.00 damage -- I had to pay the collision deductible and then collect from the rider myself which I did. The police would not attend as no one was hurt but they said they would give the rider " a talking to".
ICBC gave me the impression that it may be my fault for being on the road -- at one point I was so irritated that I asked them if I should get a lawyer ---oh no don't do that they said. They wouldn't even try to get the cost of the damage because they were worried that the rider might go after them for injuries some time in the future.
It was goofy -- Alice in Wonderland
"ATVs are prohibited from using public roads, parks, and trails."

I don't think these ATVs should always be speeding down our sidewalk. I almost called the police recently. That would have been a mistake on my part because apparently (according to the above) sidewalks can be used by them, they don't seem to be off limits.

For those that would like to start shooting... not a smart move. People can shoot back and its not hard to find out where the shooter lives if they want to go down that route. I know I wouldn't tolerate for a second anyone shooting at me. I try to respect residents near where I ride, but if I encountered vigilantes (especially one shooting at me salt or no salt)... they would likely find out the hard way they would have been better off minding their own business.
Like I said before, all you can do is wait for these kids to grow up and move away. Or do the moving yerself.
You people complain too much methinks. If we forget about the noise or not, the police will not crack down very hard. Maybe they will buy a nice top notch atv to go joy riding after these kids but I don't see any cure to the problem unless the socialist bastards legislate us right off them.
Hmmmm, I wonder if Eagle one has a licsence for his toy. I say ban all 4 wheelers. Recycle them. If they run from the police, ummmm maybe they should be shot at.
Paid $10,000 for mine new... paid the full 12% in taxes on it... insure it through ICBC so that I have collision coverage encase I run into a kid in the trail who doesn't have insurance of his own. The vast majority of people that enjoy our outdoors do so responsibly.

Only a terrorist would shoot at a rider because they are simply out for a ride... and terrorist deserve no consideration.
Terrorists? Who uses that term of reference anymore? Not the cops, not any of our governments, not the UN, not the main stream media, not the CBC, not anyone. They are freedom fighters, militants, thugs, activists, gunmen, insurgents, radicals, urban guerrillas, but alas, not terrorists. Being politically correct is where it is at these days, bro. Pick up a thesaurus and don't say terrorist.
me thinks too many yuppies move out to rural areas and then complain about dogs, atvs, snowmobiles blah blah blah. It reminds me of the people that buy next to an airport and then complain about noise...
I think that there are just too many stupid people out there that have no consideration at all for other people.
It's illegal to drive with your ATV on any Public Road, the Law says so and if you get hit by a Car or Truck you got not leg to stand on, even if so many here think it's ok to ride where ever it pleases you.
Harbinger, you are probably right. I was thinking from the random acts of violence aspect, which would be a vigilantly shooting at someone because they don't like the noise of an ATV nearby... or in other cases planting traps on trails that target indiscriminately as has been done in the past. When people self pontificate that those kinds of actions are acceptable forms of expressing their opinions (not you), then we all lose, because the effects are the same as what a terrorist aims for in using random targets to serve as a message generator.

What if it was your kid that was out for an evening ride and came across one of these vigilantes with a salt rock gun, or worse yet a wire strung up somewhere across a trail meant to maim or worse. I bet then everyone would be talking about the senseless violence.

I'm not sure any of the words you suggest would accurately describe that kind of person? But point taken that a terrorist is a strong word to be using. Depends on ones perspective I guess.

It would be best in a perfect world if riders just had some consideation to begin with, and those that don't ride just got use to accepting the fact that in this part of the country lots of people enjoy life by getting out for a ride in our great outdoors. Peer presure probably works best IMO.
Outwest, its not illegal to ride your enduro on the roads and in the trails. Lots of people do that too.
Trails are one thing, but not the roads Eagleone. Not unless you have insurance and plates. Otherwise you have to walk the machine across and down the street. But many do not. It is difficult if not impossible for cop in a cruiser to stop let alone catch a fleeing kid on an atv or dirtbike. Sooner or later the recklessness will catch up to them, and the unfortunate NOK is then done by the police.
Let them have fun at least they're not out doing drugs and hanging around 7 11's stabbing people.
