Education Minister Shirley Bond has announced a $50,000.00 contribution towards a provincial program called "Books for Babies".

The local MLA made the announcement while attending a community breakfast at the Prince George Golf & Curling Club this morning to kick off Family Literacy Week.

"Books for Babies" is a community-based literacy program that focuses on the importance of reading to newborns.  It's expected more than 40-thousand of the reading kits will be distributed to new parents in B.C. this year.

"'Books for Babies' will introduce parents to some of the community resources available in their area and help them support their child's growth and development," says Bond, "Reading to children from the day they are born is one of the most important things a parent or guardian can do."
