The RCMP will appear before City Council tonight seeking six additional officers, a functional analyst and two full time municipal support staff.

In a report to Council, Superintendent Dahl Chambers says the Police force has had no increase in manpower for the past 10 years and there are growing problems in the community and surrounding area.

Based on a current cost of $110,000 per officer, the requested increase would mean $660,000 for new RCMP officers, an analyst pegged at $100,000.00 and the two municipal staff at $50,000 each, for a grand total of $860,000.00 annual increase in police spending.

They are seeking approval in this year’s budget.

Chambers says the work load has changed because of Government policy, court decisions, technology, Occupational health, and social expectations.

With the hiring of six new additional officers the police force in the city and region would grow to 127 officers.

Would the total number of Police in Prince George be 127 or does that number include the Regional District. When looking at costs of Policing we should be looking at the City of Prince George, only as including the Regional Districts distorts things. So the question is, how many Police Officers do we have to Police the City of Prince George when and if they get approval for this new hiring.
