Burns Lake, B.C.- The change in the weather is good news for the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako which has rescinded evacuation orders related to the West Nadina and Binta Lake fire complexes.
Fire Information Officer Jerry Wearing says the Binta Lake fire area received approximately 8 millimetres of rain, slowing the spread of the flames and soaking fine fuels, making them less likely to burn. Wearing says the fire is approximately 35 percent contained at holding at 40,000 hectares.
Regional District Chair Eileen Benedict says judging from the anxious phone calls she received last night from frustrated residents, people are very happy to be able to go home and check on things. However, she cautions that the danger posed by the fires is far from over.
“They are still on an evacuation alert, so we’re asking them to be prepared if something should change that they could have to leave their residence again. So we’re asking them not to get too comfortable at home and unpack too much.”
Some residents have been holed up in hotels and staying with friends for over a week with little information about their homes and belongings.
