Prince George B.C.- There have been  more than  700 bear complaints in Prince George since April of this year, that is a 100% increase in the number of  complaints called in for all of 2009.

There have been 30 bears destroyed so far this year,  topping the  year end total for last year of 29.

The bears will soon be looking for  food sources to fatten up  as they  prepare to hibernate.  September and October are, typically, the two busiest months for  human-bear conflict.

The Northern Bear Awareness Society is reminding residents that prevention is vital. They are calling on  residents to make sure  their yards are clear of fruit,  garbage, birdseed and compost.

Hot spots for bear sightings this past week were:
  • along Domano Boulevard between Hwy 16 and Gladstone Drive,
  • along 5th Ave between Hwy 97 and Tabor Boulevard,
  • near Ginter’s Park and
  • along Haldi Road.

WHAT !!!!!

Those damn bears are complaining again ???

They should be quiet and just munch away like us rabbits - complaining bears are a nuisance - ahhhaaaaa - so THAT'S why they have been put down !!

Probably complaining about taxes, water and sewer rate increases, HST, snow removal and the sillyness at City Hall !

Gus, Pal, Eagle - perhaps you should take note of these results - oh my !!

:-)

V.

That was a good one Rabbit.

Well, the hot weather caused no berries and the Bleeding Hearts stopped bearing hunting, so stocks are up, feed are down. Thus more interfacing with humans.

I think Tourism BC, needs to stop using words such as Pristine, untouched, wild.

There is so little out there that falls in that category. Like it or not, we are the custodians of our environment. We need to ensure that there are not too many of one spieces, which can decimate another spieces. Too many wolves, no deer. To many deers, create too many wolves. etc etc etc.

So how did mother nature do this, Feast or famine to spieces. its not a pretty sight.
What to do in case of a bear encounter.. video is more focused on grizzly bear attacks..

Yes!..the bears ARE complaining!
They are complaining about the lack of funds for B.C.Parks!
Funding for B.C. Parks has been dwindling for a number of years now...actually,7 or 8 years!
Isn't that odd..that is the same length of time we have had a Liberal government in B.C.!
I should complain to a park ranger...anyone seen a park ranger around lately?
Oh wait...there's one now...oops,nope..that's a contractor!
The only bears I know are on TV and they talk. I see them when I am channel surfing. Bears are cute and cuddly. Once upon a time when I was a little kid I watched Yogi Bear on TV. That brainwashing kinda makes me biased now. Bunnies too.
"The Northern Bear Awareness Society is reminding residents that prevention is vital. They are calling on residents to make sure their yards are clear of fruit, garbage, birdseed and compost."

The Citizen needs to help shock the population into doing that. They can help by publishing pictures of killed bears on the front page: "Another bear shot dead on the streets of Prince George".

Readership will go up, and dead bears will be reduced. :-)
An interesting statistic actually. 7 people shot so far in this city. BUT 30 bears hooked on berries rather than coke.
"Keep your Yard clear of Compost" The compost is for my Garden, it's like our Garbage I also keep it outside. The Bear People must be all living in Apartments or some other Place devoid off any thing real "Disneyland here I come". Never had a Bear looking the Compost over, but the Deer like it in the Winter ,looking for something green in it to eat.
Outwest..

You got one group ramming this "green" living shit down our throats.. encouraging composting and growing gardens.

Then another group telling you you cant do it for their own agenda..

the micro management has to stop..

Tell me why does everyone want to keep all the Bears around us, is it also possible there are to many Bears ?
Did anyone even think that maybe the fires in the bushes are chasing them to town?
OMG...bangs head against wall!!!
Andy, the full circle on that one I believe goes like this...

BC Park campgrounds compete with private campground owners (so they say), so the BC liberals cut funding to provincial parks and forestry sites and give advertising partnerships of 50% or more to small tourism operators to advertise their businesses, rather than the province promoting its own natural resources that especially in this part of the province are far superior to the road side parking lots passing for campgrounds... and the circle is complete when the media receives the advertising dollars kitted to them and know who is really paying the bills... favorable coverage follows and the BC liberals get reelected....

Meanwhile potential tourists will never hear about places like Bear Lake, Carp Lake, West Lake, or of any of the forestry camp sites most would want to come here to see anyways... opportunities are lost because the provincial tourism advertising dollars don't promote provincial resources. The promotion is held hostage by private agencies using public dollars to promote the private stakeholders interests only.
I'd say that probably 25 of the thirty bears were destroyed needlessly because people panic when they see a bear and phone it in even if its not causing any problems.

Black bears are one of the only species other than humans to show signs of rational awareness. Most species operate either by instinct or command, but only humans, black bears, and some species of monkeys can make rational thought. Its why for the most part black bears are not dangerous. They would rather avoid injury or confrontation that will led to injury, and they make a conscious decision (if you allow for it) unless they are cornered or injured. A black bear will make the conscious decision to scavenge for food at night, avoid human contact, and scram when spotted because they know full well the consequences of getting caught.

I think the black bear awareness is very poor in this town, because we are led by dogma about the evil bear, when what is probably needed is better understanding of how bears operate, and thus finding better methods of reaching their rational thought to influence behavior so we don't just kill bears because someone gets spooked by one.

Look at the lady in the Kootenies with a dozen bears living with her... she could probably teach people a thing or two about bear behavior I would guess....
