Dogs go marching through Cottonwood Island Park

Prince George, B.C."Dogs are not our whole lives, but they make our lives whole"...

It's a quote from Roger Caras that local long-time pet advocate, Kathi Travers, used during her address to the crowd gathered at Cottonwood Island Park this afternoon for the SPCA's annual "Paws For A Cause" fundraising walk...

Despite the rain, there was definitely a party atmosphere as pooches and owners got together to meet-and-greet, listen to music, take part in games, but, most importantly, support the North Cariboo branch's main fundraiser of the year.

Similar walks were being held around the province in support of the shelters, but Travers points out that all the money raised here, stays here.

A director on the SPCA's provincial board, she says she's thrilled with the turn-out, "This is amazing and it shows you what we're made of: neither sleet nor snow will keep the people away from doing what's best."

While the final dollar figure raised won't be available until later tonight, Travers says, "This fundraiser helps to make our community a better place for all of us -- both two-legged and four-legged."

Lisa and Mike Poirier, shown with their dogs -- 12-year-old Basil, a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog that they rescued from a shelter (on left) and 2-year-old Opal, a Bernese Mountain dog (on right) -- began participating in 'Paws For A Cause' when they lived in Vancouver and have continued to do so for the past 6 or 7 years in Prince George.

Lisa says she enjoys supporting the SPCA and looks forward to the opportunity to let her dogs socialize, while meeting with other like-minded dog owners.

Anyone who's had the pleasure of visiting the SPCA's Spay/Neuter Clinic on Queensway will recognize April Manning...she is the cheerful face that greets you when you enter the clinic and soothes the sometimes frayed nerves of pets and owners visiting the clinic.

Manning's dog, Rosalee, thought little of the pomp and circumstance surrounding today's event...making her owner pull out a poop bag, just as the walk got underway!

The photo at left shows Rosalee (at right) looking ready to 'forget the incident', with April and vet Kim Yuill's pet, Norman.

Dogs are the only things that love you more than themselves.
No way anything can do that!
You obviously don't know a thing about dogs.
I actually believe that people who can't or haven't had the ability to truly appreciate what a dog can bring to there lives, that they are missing out on something really special.
