While it  is often so easy to criticize those in police uniform,  it  is a welcome change when  someone steps forward to say a special thanks for a job well done.  Opinion 250 received this letter this week, and wanted to ensure it was  posted  so  the people involved could  see that their efforts were appreciated.

Dear Opinion 250 Readers,

Our police in Prince George come under lots of criticism but I'm grateful that they are here.

My mother-in-law moved in with us last May and she is having a little trouble with her short term memory. Two weeks ago I received a call from the RCMP dispatcher and she wanted to put me through to one of their Sergeants regarding my mother-in-law. The Sergeant advised that he had my mother-in-law and when I asked what had she done he advised that she had been "a bad girl".

My mother-in-law likes to walk and has been venturing out a little bit but usually stays on our street. This time she strolled down St Lawrence to Domano and on her return missed the turn towards our place.

The Sergeant was on his day off and trail bike riding with his son in the woods beyond the top of St Lawrence. He noticed my mother-in-law standing alone and looking confused and somehow managed to find a way to get to me.

I got to them and before taking her home, thanked the officer and his son for looking after her. While I don't think "thanks" is enough I do think that you all should acknowledge that our police can also be good neighbours.

Thanks to all of the RCMP that were involved.

Doug Willoughby

It's often very easy to criticize others till you walked in their shoes. Well said!
A few years ago I was in the parking lot of Save-On Foods and I had a street person approach me to ask me for my quarter that I was taking out of my shopping cart. An off duty RCMP staff sargeant stepped in and asked me if everything was okay. He may have assumed this man was harrassing me which he wasn't. It was nice that this off duty member made the effort in his personal time to do what he did. I do appreciate these random acts of kindness, not only from RCMP members but people from all walks of life.
Here, here!!

Agreed. The few bad apples in the barrel should never presume to speak for the vast majority of excellent members doing an impossible job - their management however ....
It's these sorts of stories that we need to hear more about. The RCMP and police have it tough because when something bad happens, it's all over the news. Because that's what sells papers and gets viewers to tune in.

Fact is, if we reported about every incidence like this, where a member went out of his way to be kind can caring to someone in need, it'd take up the entire newscast and then some.

Good work, members! Keep it up and know that so many of us appreciate everything you do!
