Williams Lake, B.C. – Relief may be in sight for some Chilcotin residents stranded by flooding and washouts along Highway 20.
The Cariboo Regional District says Ministry of Transportation crews are working to complete a 40 to 50 km detour between Tatla Lake and Anahim Lake within the next couple of days.
The areas of Anahim Lake, Nimpo Lake, Charlotte Lake, Towdystan, and Ulkatcho have been isolated since heavy rain caused flooding and road closures. Highway 20 remains closed in both directions; 20 km east of Bella Coola to 15 km west of Anahim Lake at Louis Creek, and 45 km west of Tatla Lake because of wash outs.
The CRD says the local state of emergency in Electoral Area J is still in place and its Emergency Operations Centre is still up and running.
Officials say 68 residents have registered with the Emergency Social Services Reception Centre in Williams Lake. There are 29 Bella Coola residents registered and 39 from the Anahim Lake area.
