The Canada Revenue Agency is hosting a training session this afternoon for volunteers willing to help those on low and fixed incomes prepare their income tax returns.
CRA Program Coordinator, Darlene Mallais, says, "A lot of people don't realize they must file an income tax return to continue to receive their government benefits."
"By helping them complete their returns, volunteers ensure that these people receive all the benefits and credits they're entitled to," she says. Mallais says the program, which is entering its 35th year, welcomes individual volunteers, but especially encourages community organizations and agencies to become involved.
The volunteers work with community agencies to establish tax clinics in public libraries, community centres, schools, churches, seniors' residences, nursing homes, and other central locations. Last year, 306 volunteers in Northern B.C. and the Yukon helped more than 9,704 people complete their returns.
Today's training session runs from 1pm to 4pm at the CRA at 280 Victoria Street, another session goes this friday evening between 6pm and 9pm and Saturday, February 4th between 10a and 1pm. For more information, phone 561-7812.
