Terrace, B.C. – As rain continues to pound the North Coast, the BC River Forecast Centre has extended a high streamflow advisory for the region. Officials say the advisory includes the Kitimat, Kitsumkalum (Dutch Valley), and Bear (Stewart) rivers, and other smaller tributaries of the Nass and lower Skeena rivers.

Environment Canada has maintained the Rainfall Warning for the North Coast‐Coastal and North Coast‐Inland sections. Heavy rainfall for the next 2 days is expected to bring up to 180 mm for Coastal sections and near 100 mm for Inland sections by Wednesday evening, continuing into Thursday. For the Kitimat area, the 2‐day precipitation forecast is for 75 mm.

The River Forecast Centre says river levels in the region did start to accumulate more water throughout the day on Tuesday, but officials say the water is still below levels of concern at this time. Just two months ago, the water levels in the region were at draught level three or very dry conditions.

The good news is that while the North Coast takes the brunt of this Pacific storm, it has likely spared flood-weary residents of the Central Coast and Bella Coola Valley. Meteorologist David Jones with Environment Canada says the storm got pushed north, easing the expected rainfall for Bella Coola this week.

The BC Government  is shipping Gabion dike systems to shore up flood prevention around the Bella Coola airport with rain in the forecast this week.
