Two RCMP officers on the watch for speeders at  highways 97 and 16

Prince George, B.C. – The new sanctions for excessive speeders are having an impact in the Prince George region.
If caught driving 40 kms over the limit,   there will be a $368 dollar fine, and the vehicle will be impounded for 7 days.  If caught  doing 60kms over the limit the fine is $483 dollars and vehicle impoundment.

Since the legislation took effect on the 20th of September,   between 15 and 20 vehicles have been impounded in Prince George.

RCMP Sergeant Al Steinhaueser says on Sunday, Prince George RCMP spotted a sports car on Foothills Boulevard. It was clocked on radar at doing 154 km/h  in an 80 Km zone. The driver stopped, the ticket issued and the vehicle was impounded. Three hours later, officers stopped a motorcycle for speeding, and it was the same driver who had been stopped in the sports car. “This time the speed was not excessive, but none the less, it was one very expensive day for that driver” says Steinhaueser.

The fines  handed out do not take into account the fees that will be charged by the tow company and impoundment fees  or the  possible increases to  insurance rates.

North District Sergeant Pat McTiernan says  the new sanctions seem to be having an impact on the highway “What we’ve noticed on the highways is that speeds have come down, we’ve only had two instances where vehicles have been impounded and we think that’s because people are starting to think about the consequences.”

Sergeant McTiernan says in the Peace region it used to be that drivers would just say give me the ticket   and be on their way “ Now,  they know that the company truck is going to be impounded for a week and that may not go over very well with the boss.”

Sergeant McTiernan says there is work being done to make tickets stand up in other provinces as right now, a ticket in one cannot be held up in another. “We have a lot of work to do yet, but that is what we are working on.”

OMG.. this is soooooooo awesome..... I can hardly wait for all those "pushy" speeders on the Hart to get caught....

Oh yeahhhhh.......

Want to know what the effective speed limit on the Chief Lake/Ness Lake RD is. It's 100 Km/h - not the 80 posted. Try doing 80 or even 85. Half the time you get someone riding your rear and passing where it isn't safe to pass. When was the last time I saw a police car out there - I think it was spring and I drive the road every day.

I guy blowing down the highway if there's no traffic at 40 k over is less dangerous (I'm not saying he isn't dangerous) than the a-hole that tail gates and passes on solid lines, but he's much more difficult to catch. But I can tell you this, whether you get killed by a terrorist, drug dealer, or a crappy driver, you're still just as dead, and your family still grieves just as much. I wish police would focus on the truly dangerous drivers and just not shoot the fish in the barrel.
I would love to see them double or triple these fines...
still too many idjit drivers out there...
I was going through a construction zone the other day and these same idjets were going buy me like I was standing still... even looked at my speedometer to confirm I was in fact moving...

It is all about choices, they choose to speed, they choose to have the police ticket them... and the police will.
Wonder what a tire blowout does to your vehicle at 154 kmh, got a feeling if the driver is inexperienced, he's gonna ditch and roll or head in to oncoming traffic. Well in time, perhaps our insurance rates will start going down, one can always hope.

Had a lady in a white SUV with a dog in her lap tailgating me yesterday. She gave me the glare when she passed me. I was going with the flow of traffic, but she insisted on riding my bumper, AND I GET THE GLARE FROM HER. Older woman too. Maybe she was letting her dog drive..........
I was passed on the Hart yesterday by a driving instructor in a company driver training car and he had a dog on his lap... great!
I wont name the company but it rhymes with "box"...
GRRRR....
JamesToney you should get your facts straight before you make such statements, there is a charge for slander you know!!

not sure why my posting showed up twice?
I disagree with making the RCMP judge, jury and executioner. I always thought there was the presumption of innocence in Canadian law. All we need now is the word of an RCMP officer to have your car impounded and huge fines levied. It will also mean more police chases. Someone speeding might be more willing to make a break for it than risk their vehicle being impounded and getting a huge fine, and let the RCMP prove who was driving when they get the summons in the mail.

Instead of building a bigger RCMP, they should have built a bigger courthouse to deal with the increased number of traffic violation disputes this ill conceived legislation is going to generate.
And ya'll wondered why they proposed having sheriffs doing traffic duty.
James Toney, you've made a comment concerning a mountie being suspended.
When did this occur? What conflicts? How long was the suspension?
Please, for the sake of other posters and
Al Steinhaueser, be careful what you post.
That statement could land you in court.
I've know this particular policeman for 10 years, he has a lot of integrity.
Wonder if all this traffic enforcement is all smoke and mirrors to take away from the fact government and police can't do much about organized crime.
They are going after disorganized EXCESSIVE speeders.

There seem to be a few RCMP experts on here. Can someone tell us what size the traffic unit is. I think it is less than 10% of the staff.
Certain comments have been deleted. They make an accusation without facts, and are actionable.
They have been removed and will not be tolerated.
both sides on this have good arguments
Thankyou Ben.
Gus its about 2.4%. I guess there's no political will in our leaders that be, for more.
Someone tailgates you and I mean really close, one thing works take the foot of the Pedal and make him pass you, if he is not passing you he will get the Message and back of to a safer distance .
im sorry meisner..i forgot the rules and regulations here and it wont happen again.i didnt think it would cause this much of a problem regarding some idiot on the internet running his mouth..250 opinion>Pg Citizen sorry ben.
i was just talking trash cause he gave me a few tickets like 5 years ago haha didnt think people would actually care just to clear everything up
Thank you "Give more". I had heard it was 4 or 5 people. So that fits then. Quite low actually.

I assume those on other duties will pull people over when they see a moving violation, especially if there might be another reason which might give rise to probable cause to allow them to probe a bit deeper.
It is all about money. The government is more than happy to allow you to buy a 405 hp car (2010 Ford Mustang-$35k) that will do well over 200kph. So much for enviromental considerations and global warming. Before you say they should not be telling us what to buy remember they have no problem telling us how to live the rest of our lives with all the rules and regulations. So they want us to buy these vehicles so that we can speed and then tax us again.
if you get stopped take it to court, it will take a year or so before you go and theres a good chance the cop won't show up. it works for me:)
lol ya why have 600hp dodge cars if your only allowed to go 50km never made any sense to me either
Who cares how fast the car will go, it's the driver that controls it. My wife's Passat will do over 200kph as well. Have I ever driven it that fast? Nope, never even thought of it. I'd say the fact that the government allows cars like the new Mustang is proof that they could care less about interfering with our lives. How about people taking some responsibility for their own actions for a change?

I have a great idea though. Instead of large fines, if people are caught doing excessive speeds, how about the government gets to impound the car and either sell it or crush it? I could even care less if the owner is still stuck making payments on something they don't have :)

Came down the Hart Highway the other day and a guy with a blue pickup going north was flashing his head lights! Sure enough, by the Rescue building a cop was set up with his tripod and a radar gun!

The cop must have thought by golly, look how slow everybody is going! Our new impound laws have taken effect already!

Of course once past the annoyance the majority was doing the old dipsy-doo pass left and right without signalling at 20 klicks over the limit routine again!

Can't win!
These new laws are simply put in to feed more money into the bottomless liberal pit. They have spent themselves into oblivion and this is just another think tank cash influx to make the books look better. It won't work Campbell; all you're doing is getting the public more intent on removing your government and building the moat between the cops and the people a lot wider.
POLICE STATE, that is a fact! Gordy Scumball needs to pay for the OWELYMPICS.

I will never come back to BC, unless things change. No fricon COP is going to be my Judge and Jury.........EVER!!! What a pathetic lot you R....CMP
It's painful living here---trust me.
How about just obeying the traffic rules which are in place for the safety of every one on the road?

Too difficult? Too bad.
Everyone who hates speeding tickets..

Raise your right foot!
