Prince George, B.C. - A single vehicle crash on Highway 5, just south of Clearwater, has claimed the life of a 33-month old child.

RCMP say the accident happened around 11:30pm last night, when a southbound vehicle left the road and hit a tree.  The victim's 21-year-old mother was transported to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops in critical condition.  The 19-year-old male driver, from Kamloops, sustained only minor injuries.

The Clearwater unit of the RCMP's Central Interior Traffic Services continues to investigate the fatal crash.  A collision analyst has been assisting officers.

Police say road conditions were good at the time of the accident and there is no evidence that alcohol or excessive speed were factors.

The B.C. Coroner's Service is also working with the RCMP.
