Prince George, B.C.- Today marks the start of two days of workshops and addresses by key players about how to fight gang activity in Prince George.
The Anti-Gang Summit is taking place at the Ramada hotel and will look at a variety of issues including why youth are drawn to gangs and crime, and what can be done to minimize the risk of youth taking that path.
Organized in the wake of the broad daylight shooting of a young man on Oak Street, the two day event will welcome David Park of the Justice Institute of BC. It released a report in mid-September called “Kids ‘N Crime,: Economic Aspects of the Development and Prevention of Criminality Among Children”.
That report says the long term future probabilities of a person following a life of crime or a positive path, are determined during pregnancy and the ages from birth to five years.
The report says issues such as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, success in school, are key factors in helping develop youth who will no not likely be enticed to a life of crime. “The criminal tendency can be avoided to a substantial extent if children in their early years are involved in developmental activity that leads to positive personal growth or if developmental difficulties are recognized and remedial efforts applied.”
The report concludes it is good public policy to spend the money necessary to help moms to be to have healthy pregnancy and to provide the programs needed to support those children who have challenges.
“Diverting children and youth from a life of crime achieves outstanding positive results in terms of both social and economic dimensions, including costs borne by government.”
Those costs can range from increased burdens on health care to correctional services.
Park will be the luncheon speaker tomorrow.
This evening, there is a free public open Session. It will feature Sgt. Shinder Kirk of the Uniformed Gang Task Force, and James Coulter, a former Gang member.
That session starts at 6:30 this evening and runs until 9:00.
