Stantec Zoning Plan May Not Be Your Idea of City Needs

It was about three or four years ago the city hired a fellow (his name now even escapes me) to come up with a plan for the down town of the city . He  did indeed come up with a plan.  It was to construct a downtown farmers market, theatre, skating area, sort of a place of all places at a cost of around forty million of our money.

He laid the idea before city hall who couldn’t get out of their seats fast enough to be clear of him and the only person that came away with some coin in their pocket was the man who put together the plan.  Oh he did say he wanted to have Wal –Mart located downtown. They said thanks but no thanks and headed for Highway 16 west. You folks at City Hall correct me if I’m wrong, the tab was for around 160 grand,  and the paper from that report is far too stiff  to be used  for anything but holding up the basement floor at city hall.

Now we are being told that we have hired on a new company Stantec, who have credentials from cities in Florida, Michigan and Arizona to name a few, with some stops in places like Calgary and Edmonton. The mission line is “Emphasis should be on what’s right for the community “. Great idea and really what planning is supposed to be all about. The community saying just how it wants to grow and where, along with how it should be within the confines of the existing city.

Now how in the world Stantec can reach into our minds and come up with what we think is a bit beyond me. Oh to be sure they are holding a meeting (June 21st at the City Hall annex between 5.30 and 9.00 PM) to get your input into how you feel the city should go.  Now do you suppose they will take the problem of the Connaught- Miller Addition- Hooker- drug dealer - homeless  problem and ensure that zoning is handled in such a manner to eliminate for example a homeless shelter on Queensway , which (according to our Premier) is about to get the old rubber stamp in a rezoning application?  Or are you more inclined to believe that a plan will be put forward of what someone from Stantec, along with some bureaucrats from city hall, want and it will be submitted for City Council to put its stamp of approval on it?

Do you feel as though you could make a difference by attending this meeting and suggesting the down town shouldn’t be a catchment area for all of the drug dealers, homeless, pawn shops, soup kitchens and shoot up centers in the city? I’m sure you will receive a warm reception but you’re thoughts about what the city needs, I’m sorry, we left that up to Stantec remember?

That, is one man's opinion.

Just another collosal waste of our tax dollars, what else is new?I think the next time we hire one of these so called "experts"to do the exsisting councils job we should just deduct the money from what we are already paying this pathetic bunch, then the problem would be solved. Here is some free advice for council.....take the money your planning on paying these Stantec guys and fill some pot holes with it,we will be better off.
over and out Rock
IMO it sounds like Colin and the gang are looking for another fantastic way to waste our cash again. Let's cut the B.S. If the yolkels down at city hall really wanted to save downtown why the hell did they build the multiplex uptown? Why is there still no residential living downtown? Why have they given out business licenses to the eighty five legal fences(pawn shops) along our beautiful and oh so wisely revamped 3rd ave. There's nothing like spending a beautiful Saturday afternoon sifting through the remnants of some guy's dry box or maybe picking up some poor paperboy's bike for a cool $100. In the words of Rock, Colin buddy,it is going to sting.
HOO YAH! Who dreams up this crap? Why is city council so afraid to have their own dream? Is failure what scares them? Wake up guys, nothing has worked downtown yet. Don't be afraid to come up with your own ideas after all you live here. Hey you councillors maybe even shop downtown, probably not that often though. Because maybe if you spent some time down there you would have some ideas of your own. "Dare to dream" don't they say? "Seeing is believing" isn't that another saying. Why havn't we run a sting operation like they did in Vancouver about a year ago? Anyone hear about that one? Petty crime was so bad beacause all the dope addicts will steal anything for a fix. Someone has to buy it right? Well the cops went around with hot crap and saw what businesses buy it. Guess what happened next? The police recommended to Vancouver city hall to cancel those businesses licenses. Ingenious? Not reall, just common sense. Has city hall here ever thought of anything as simple as that to help clean up the downtown. Doubtful.

Peace out and councillors and Mayor, GET IT TOGETHER.
In my opinion, what the city of prince george needs is for its residents to take pride in the downtown. Right now, it seems like no one does.

Not the people, not the business owners, not the building owners. If you take any time to have a tour through any "available" office space downtown, you'll notice that often very little pride is taken in the care of the buildings.

Whether we need a new mini pacific centre, condos, parks and farmers markets...whatever it is, it needs to instill pride in our community.

I compare our downtown to the room in your house where you throw all the stuff you dont want your guests to see when they come over.

ouch.
Truth is our downtown is in the fallout zone of our three local pulp mills that drive our local economy.

Its a catch 22.

I see the solution involving two truths.

#1 For the downtown to have any relevance it needs to be directly connected to the economic heart of our community. This means a direct bridge link to the pulp mills that also doubles as a dangerous goods route. It menas downtown Prince George should be focused on an industrial orientation.

#2 The towncenter is clearly Cranbrook Hill Crest and this should be properly zoned today to create a hub of services and high end residential living that will be located in the fresh air next to the wilderness Prince George is known for.
Chadder, IMO you should stop hitting the crack pipe bud. your ideas are so far off the wall that you could only be some sort of government worker. no offense bud.

peace out sistas.
