Regional District of Fraser Fort George Chair Art Kaehn, Mayor Dan Rogers and Chief Dominic Frederick sign letter of intent Prince George, BC
– As expected, Prince George Mayor Dan Rogers, Regional District of Fraser-Fort George Chairman Art Kaehn, and Lheidli T’enneh Chief Dominic Frederick have officially signed a Tri-Party Letter of Intent for the Community Forest Agreement Proposed Expansion. This letter provides the expression of mutual interest and terms for the parties to engage in a process that will lead to a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on a partnership for the amended Community Forest Agreement (CFA) subject to approval by the Province.
"We are very pleased to be working collaboratively with the City and the Regional District on the Community Forest Expansion, which is of mutual benefit to both of our communities," said Lheidli T’enneh Chief Dominic Frederick.
"This is an exciting opportunity to collaborate with the Lheidli T’enneh and the Regional District in developing solutions to reduce the growing wildfire hazards and support agricultural development," said Mayor Dan Rogers. "Initiatives and partnerships like this will allow us to reach Council’s goal of improving the health and safety of our citizens."
"The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George is pleased to join with the Lheidli T’enneh and the City of Prince George in working together to not only reduce the risk of wildfire in the area around Prince George, but also support bio-diversity, agriculture and wildlife," says Regional District Chairman Art Kaehn.
At their October 18 meeting, Council approved moving forward on steps that will formally begin the application process to the Province to amend the Prince George Community Forest Agreement. The CFA amendment is necessary to expand the wildfire mitigation work to certain Crown land areas surrounding Prince George to reduce wildfire hazards to rural and urban properties, public safety and livelihoods.
Additionally, Council approved staff submitting the application for an expanded CFA to the Province, subject to the Tri-Party Letter of Intent being signed by the parties. While the Province reviews the application, this will provide the time necessary for the three parties to work on the MOU.
