Prince George, B.C. - Representatives of the B.C. Nurses Union met with Northern Health’s Chief Operating Officer, Michael McMillan today and McMillan is pleased with how the session went.
“This meeting was scheduled to happen before the Nurses held a rally in Prince George last month” says McMillan, “I thought it was a very positive meeting.”
McMillan says the timing for such a meeting is perfect as budget planning for the next year is underway. “We laid out our plan to enhance staffing levels in ICU and in the surgical step down unit.” He says the plans for the coming year also includes education but adds he didn’t offer any “the cheque is in the mail “ promises.
McMillan says BCNU President Deborah McPherson took part in the session, and the two sides have agreed to meet regularly “This is something that had been planned in the past, but everyone gets busy and the meetings may have fallen by the wayside, so we are holding firm to a commitment to have joint union-management meetings on a regular basis.”
Last month, nurses rallied outside the Northern Health offices on Brunswick Street saying they were concerned about the quality of patient care throughout the region because of staffing concerns. McMillan says patient safety and quality of care for patients always come first.

Think I'll wait to hear from the rank and file nurses who complained.
There did not appear to be much interest from managements side prior to the nurses getting out and demonstrating, or they wouldn't have had to to that, right?
As far as staffing levels, sure, go ahead, increase them, but then, how you gonna keep them here?
I for one am fed up at the way this board is treating it's employees, let alone patients.
