Williams Lake, B.C. - Williams Lake Mayor Kerry Cook says her participation in a trip to Ottawa this week over the Prosperity Mine project was well worth it.
Cook was part of a ten person delegation from the Cariboo-Chilcotin that met face to face with federal ministers to find out more about why Ottawa rejected the gold and copper mine proposal near Williams Lake.
“We had a large, committed delegation, and we accomplished what we set out to do – to get some answers behind the no decision, and find a way to keep this project as an opportunity for Williams Lake and the Cariboo Chilcotin,” says Mayor Cook. “Our delegation delivered a strong, regional message about the huge opportunity this mine represents.”
The group, which featured area MPs, an MLA, and chamber of commerce officials, met with Transportation Minister Chuck Strahl, Environment Minister John Baird, Fisheries Minister Gail Shea, and Treasury Board President Stockwell Day.
Cook says they pressed the federal ministers for clarification and pounded home the importance of the project for the region.
The Mayor says they expect to get more details and the next steps for the Prosperity project before December 17th.
