Prince George, B.C.- Enbridge has been quick to issue a statement in the wake of a full page ad that appeared in the Globe and Mail today.
In the ad, 61 First Nations say they have banded together to form an alliance to oppose the twin pipeline project that would cross from Bruderheim Alberta to Kitimat.
The alliance calls itself, the “Save the Fraser Gathering of Nations” and it’s message in the ad was clear:
“We will not allow the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipelines, or similar Tar Sands projects, to cross our lands, territories and watersheds, or the ocean migration routes of Fraser River salmon.”
In it’s reaction to the ad, Enbridge issued a statement saying despite the ad, there are people who support the project. “There are a great many people, including First Nations and community members along the proposed route, who understand that this project can be built and operated safely. These are the same people who support the project” reads the statement.
Enbridge says it recognizes that every project wil have its supporters and detractors, but urges people to learn more about the Northern Gateway Project and to take part in the Joint Review process “Participating in - rather than protesting - the process is the best way for people to ensure their voices are heard.”
The Joint Review process is expected to take up to two years.
Those who opposed the pipeline express concerns about environmental damage to the watershed and to the disaster that would face coastal eco systems and communities should there be an oil tanker spill.
