Cullen Says 'Not A Good Day For Enbridge'

Prince George, B.C. -  The Federal NDP's Natural Resources and Energy critic says the 'ball' is now firmly in the Conservative government's court...

By a vote of 143-to-138, Nathan Cullen's motion banning oil supertankers off the north and central coast of B.C. won support in the House of Commons late today.  While the vote is non-binding, the New Democrat MP expects the court of public opinion will win out in the end.

The Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP says, "We believe the House has given the government a mandate tonight to follow through on this, if they choose not to -- we're going to give them the time, we're going to allow them the space to do what's right -- if they choose not to, as many of us suspect, then we move to the second stage."

Cullen says that second stage will begin in weeks, rather than months, and involves sitting down with the groups that have advocated for the ban -- First Nations, environmental groups, municipal leaders from the region and fishing and tourism businesses -- to find a truly grassroots way to determine the next course of action.

Cullen admits it could take the next general election to realize the 'gains' of today's victory.  "I think the Conservatives, having landed on the wrong side of this vote so clearly, has got a number of them worried about their next election prospects because, clearly, people in B.C. don't want this thing and I don't know which part of 'No' the government doesn't understand -- so while this doesn't legally force the hand of the government right now, this clearly sets the stage for the what the next election question will be in B.C. and there is two: one of them, the HST, and the other one is now on supertankers off the northcoast."

As for the impact on the Northern Gateway twin pipeline project, Cullen says it's not a good day for Enbridge.  "But we've said from day one that their project had too much risk and not enough benefit for the people of northern B.C. and British Columbia, in general."  He says it's up to the company to try and make its case, but they lost today and he suspects they'll lose in the long run.

"First Nations, environmental groups, municipal leaders from the region and fishing and tourism businesses"
Wow, thats the group that should be setting policies for everyone. I suspect if you add this groups tax base up it would be a NEGATIVE to the province...
Actually I would guarentee it.
guarantee - pardon the typing ;-)
Just wondering how much knowledge these people have of the actual proposal. I think a lot of people are stating opinion without taking the time to investigate thoroughly.

We already have gas and oil lines around BC. This is just one more and a much more modern proposal.
Cullen should jump in the ocean before he kills prosperity in the north.

By golly, them NDP'ers are something else!!!
Cullen you are very wrong in thinking all of BC is behind your crusade. There are some of us in BC that believe that you as a representative of government should stand behind the processes of the systems established by MP's over many years prior to your arrival. These processes were not born out of convenience, nor overnight. they are processed established through legislation, reviewed at committee's, etc, using reasoned and balanced judgement. Let the review happen and stand behind the results of it knowing its underpinned by reasoned, factual judgement, instead of pre-judging and concluding prior to reviewing any facts. What other processes should we throw away or change for convenience to suit your needs or those of your supporters?
I do not know Don. I have read much from Enbridge as well as information presented by organizations such as Pembina.

So where are the long term benefits, as in 5 years after the construction has come and gone? The jobs are in Alberta and a few on the coast. I understand about 50 at the most.

If we were to charge a transmission tax, we might get some meaningful benefit.
Do you live on the coast pg250fan?

If all of BC were behind him, it would not need to be called a crusade.

If there were no people who were willing to go on a crusade, we would not have some of the better things in our lives. Going along with the crowd rarely creates change.
Here are comments from Cullen, Enbridge, as well as a couple of envrionment groups.

“Northern Gateway is committed to putting in place a comprehensive, world-class marine safety program for this project. These include use of only modern double-hulled tankers; independent BC pilots and IMO certified tanker crews; all tankers vetted by third-party agency before gaining entry to port; escort tugboat tethered to laden tankers; radar system to augment the automatic identification system being installed along coastal routes. This marine safety infrastructure would make the BC coastline a model of world class marine safety…We at Enbridge are looking forward to participating in the upcoming JRP hearing process where the evidence will be presented and tested in an open, rigorous and fair forum.”

What they forgot to mention is that they will pay Mother Nature off to keep the seas calm ...... just in case. :-)

HD we need to keep our oceans clean if anyone wants to jump into it.
The north will not prosper from a pipe under the ground, nor will anyone prosper from poluted seas.
It's ok Boudicca, HD is moving somewhere that people don't care about anything but their bank accounts. Just ignore him/her,LOL.
One of the biggest advocates against the Proposed pipeline are USA self interest groups. Last thing they want is for Canada to have a way to market their oil to off shore countries mainly China. The way it is now they (USA) can dictate the price they pay for Canadian oil
