Prince George, B.C.- City Council for the City of Prince George will be receiving   a recommendation from the Operations Director that the snow removal level of  service remain unchanged. That follows a public consultation period which had 80% of those who responded calling for no change in the level of service. The wording will be changed in the snow and ice policy to reflect a desire to have downtown streets cleared on the firs evening shift following a snowfall.
Also on the agenda today, the details of the annual satisfaction survey.   This one only had 363 responses out of 4500 sent out. That’s a response rate of 8% which is down from the previous year.   The satisfaction survey is used to help shape the City’s budget and determine where people would like to see their tax dollars go.
Council will hear a request from the River Boat Association that the Nechako River, River Road  boat launch be cleared of snow as early as is possible in the spring. The Association says   with no other access to the rivers, this is the only launch that could be used in the event of an emergency.
The Mayor and City manager will be asking Council for approval to sign the BC Hydro, BC Residential Electricity Information, Information Requester Registration Form. This is a necessary step if the City is to be able to move forward and share information that will lead to the discovery of grow ops.

I don't know who these surveys are sent to but I have lived here for 40 years and have never seen one of them.
It also seems the response level is low......maybe they should look at how these are sent out and to whom..
This City typically has a low response rate.

One of the theories of why, of course, is that people will only fill out surveys such as that if they feel that there is some follow through. Frankly, I feel the linkage in people's minds between a survey and the activities falling from them is very difficult to discern.

It would be nice to know how many responded to the snow clearing survey.

It was likely telexed or mailed out to people. The city has not figured out that they can get a lot more by having it done over the internet.
Sweet Jesus, who are they surveying that thinks this city has adequate snow removal?
The survey regarding city services was not only mailed out to some people, it was available on the home page of the city's web site. Though I didn't participate, I did see it there.

Headshake, I for one think the streets are more than adequately cleaned. I drive downtown everyday and see no issues with the streets, or at least none compared to municipalities I have lived in previously.
Harold Moffat had the right idea, he said it will all go away in the spring. Snow that is. And I remember living on a residential street that was never ploughed during the winter. It was not a problem and we didn’t own a honking suv like there are so many today. Our Kids rode the buss to school and to work.
We have never lived in a city where the people were to lazy to shovel out their driveway after the snow plough went by. This is all done by private contractors and makes one wonder what the annual cost is.

If I were on council I would go the Moffat plan and only plough the bus routes. Ride the bus or walk.
Cheers
Actually we did received a survey in with our tax bill but as we have only lived here for 2 yrs I didn't feel I had enough experience with the city ways to make an educated comment.

I was surprised to see they didn't plow out the schools first thing and when there are 800 kids trying to get there in the morning you need a 4X4 just to get through the parking lot safely...
If I would go to the Moffat Plan, I would never have built the library. After all, it is just a storage for books.

I would have kept the library in the existing Senior's Centre, and built the new building for the Seniors ... ;-)

I would also never have built additional floors onto the City Hall. Just resulted in hiring more people to fill the space.

Same thing with the new Police station. It is going to generate the need to fill a lot of space that is going to be built for future staff expansion.
School parking lot????? That is SD57. They are lucky they get a heated building these days with a couple of teachers. No money to plow snow.
gus: the article said they got 363 responses.
MakinTrax: sounds like that's all you drive. You should try driving into residential neighbourhoods after a big snowfall of even three or four days afterward.
As for me, I did go to the online survey. I spent about a half hour putting in thoughtful and fair concerns and views, offered efficiency improvements and when I was done, I got a message telling me that it couldn't go through because it was temporarily suspended. Nice, eh?
For those who have to drive any and all streets in this town after big snowfalls, we find that efficient snowplowing is neither timely nor well thought out. Even those driving bigger vehicles have a hard time navigating a lot of streets for many days afterwards. They say it takes 5-6 days to get it all cleared up but it takes a lot longer than that.
When you consider that probably 30/40% of the Police and Staff work afternoon shift, midnight shift, and week-ends, you have to wonder what they need all the space for.

It is somewhat misleading for them the indicate that they need space for 140 Police, and 50 Staff, when a large portion are working other shifts. They need space for probably 90 people during the day at most.

This police station is much more than is needed for a small town like Prince George. (72,000) people.

I strongly suggest that people sign the Alternate Approval Form at City Hall and force this issue to a referendum. If anyone thinks we can afford this bloody building at a cost of $40 Million plus $36 Million in interest over 20 years, they need to give their head a shake.

With this building, and the Winter Games borrowing, approx 10/15 Million we will sew up first place in Canada for spending per capita. A rather dubious distinction.

Time to close the purse, and board up the trough.
Survey is gonna say ,NO new cop shop, they do not need a new cop shop, make due with what ya got.Jus how much is Sh*#*@y Hall spending on these Surveys?
It's no wonder they've got no funds for snow removal, survey after survey consultants fees...Wow makes ya wonder who's getting graft!!
This survey is a sham. It was engineered to fail; just like the NDP recall of previous years.
This form letter should have been a yes or no. As it is now, we need an unreasonable amount of signatures to "allow" us to take part. That is devious as hell! In my book, we should have been taking part long before they started spending money on it. Same goes for the Art Gallery, the winter games, and this proposed arts centre. These item are huge expenditures and should not be decided by a few elected officials but should be taken to the population for a vote. Majority rules! How about some democracy Mayor Dan?? I am collecting signatures for this event and I suddenly understand the massive amount of paper we would be taking to City Hall to make this go to a referendum. 500 sheets of untouched paper is about 4 inches high. we are talking about a pile over 40 inches! They have set the goal high to assure themselves a win. We have until Dec 30th to get these papers to the thieves at City Hall. I don't really think we should leave the counting to them. Get involved and help us do this! The city clerk will give you as many forms as you want. You can also copy them yourself. Phone Eric Allen 564 4531.
This form is not really a survey. It is a no vote for tyranny. Notice it is called "Alternate approval process". That would be alternative to allow us our democratic right to choose. It's sad; I still talk to many people who have not heard about this.
The so called survey on snow removal was a poorly designed sham to get the answer city staff were looking for. Now they can transfer previously ear marked funding to other pet projects and really stick it to us taxpayers for all things even remotely related to snow and explain it away by saying: "Well that's what you said you wanted!"
