Kitimat, B.C.- The plans to ship liquefied natural gas from a terminal on the North Coast have taken another step.
Kitimat LNG has filed a licence application with the National Energy Board for approval to export liquefied natural gas from the planned Kitimat LNG terminal to be located at Bish Cove. The application requests approval to export up to 10 million metric tons of LNG a year over a 20-year time frame.
"The exportation of LNG is an important step forward for the Canadian natural gas industry and offers substantial benefits to the province of British Columbia in particular," said Janine McArdle, president of KM LNG. "The applied-for authorization will demonstrate Canadian LNG is a secure and reliable source of supply that can compete for market share in the Asia Pacific region."
Just last month, the Haisla First Nation voted strongly in favour of a lease agreement which would allow reserve land to be used for construction and operation of the LNG terminal. In return, the Haisla would receive lease and property taxes along with other benefits from the major project.
Federal and provincial environmental authorizations have also been obtained for the initial design of the LNG terminal.
The Kitimat LNG Operating General Partnership is an affiliate of Apache Corporation.
