Prince George, B.C.- The Northern Cancer Care Lodge will start construction this June, and is expected to be ready by November of 2012, at the same time the Northern Cancer Clinic takes its first patients.
In an update to the Regional District of Fraser Fort George, spokesperson Les Waldie says a letter of support for the Lodge would be appreciated, and he called upon the RDFFG to commit to support in the form of $1 dollar per person in the Regional District. Waldie says the City of Prince should be exempt as it has already donated $500 thousand dollars to the project through the land donation.
The fundraising campaign is well on its way and Waldie says the fundraising will ramp up this spring. The fundraising has already netted $7.5 million, but there is still another $2.5 million to raise. “The $10 million dollar Lodge is a really important part of this Northern Cancer Care strategy” says Waldie. He says there will be a number of services available at the Lodge for people of Prince George, whether or not they are staying at the facility.
The Lodge is being located in what used to be Alward Park at the north west corner of the property and there will be a covered walkway ( about 100 meters in length) between the Lodge and the Cancer Clinic.
“This Lodge is not a health care facility, it is a lodge, people who need more intense health care treatment will be staying in the Hospital” says Waldie.
The operations cost will be covered by a combination of funding from the Provincial Health Services Authority, clients will pay $42 dollars a day, family members will pay $55 a day, and the difference will be picked up by the Canadian Cancer Society..jpg)

The Lodge itself will have 18 rooms, for a total of 36 beds and will have other facilities such as a spiritual -meditation room (visible in photo at right) lounge, dining room, family room and a conference room.
The construction of the Lodge is estimated to have an economic impact of just over $9 million on the local economy during the construction phase, annual impact of $1.3 million through operations, and a further $2.7 million annual impact from patients who will be in the community for their treatment.
The Regional District has unanimously supported writing a letter to support the Lodge, but will review the request for per capita funding before making any decision.
