Smithers B.C. - The bodies of two skiers, buried by an avalanche south west of Smithers on Saturday, have been recovered.

The Bulkley Valley Search and Rescue attended the scene each day for the past three days. Due to unstable conditions the recovery of both people was hampered until today.

The area was made 'safe' prior to a search being conducted. This afternoon, the bodies of the 52 year old woman from Regina, Saskatchewan and the 64 year old male from Canmore, Alberta were recovered. The BC Coroners Service is continuing with their investigation.

The next of kin notifications have been made however police are not releasing the names of the victims at this time.

The Bulkley Valley Search & Rescue want to emphasize that the current snow conditions are extremely unusual due in part to the ground freezing prior to snowfall.

Each back country site is unique and has a variety of compounding conditions that can make the site hazardous. Back country enthusiasts are asked to be cognizant of these issues.
