Bell Looks Forward to New Challenge

Prince George, B.C.- Prince George-Mackenzie MLA Pat Bell says he is excited about his new Cabinet post.

Bell was named yesterday as the Minister in charge of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation. He says trades training will fall under that ministry’s umbrella. “Trades training has a significant budget, and I’m continuing to hold on to what we call forest innovation investment which is all of the work I’ve been doing in China as well as our wood first policy, initiatives around building bigger buildings, new building codes, that sort of thing.   So if it’s anything to do with trade or building the economy, it’s probably me.”

Although this new Ministry wasn’t included in the latest budget, Bell is confident there will be appropriate funding “ When I sat down with Premier Clark and she explained on what she was looking for me to take one, she clearly said  she would make sure I had the fiscal resources necessary. This is really an investment portfolio, if you are prepared to spend a little money, we will get far more return on that resource, so we are going to be looking across the sectors in the next month or two to see where the early winds are. We’ve got one of those with China with forest products. I think we can  do the same thing with mineral product in particular . I think mining is a big opportunity as well as tourism. I think there’s a couple of key sectors in the tourism industry, but technology, bio-energy those are going to be big ones for me as well to grow. We’ve got to grow our economy beyond where we’ve been. Two and a half, 3 percent does not pay for the social services the public is looking for in health care, education and so on. We need economic growth of 4 or 5% if we are going to do that.”

Bell says since the softwood lumber agreement falls under the “trade file” he carries that with him to the new portfolio.   He says he will miss some of the initiatives under forestry, such as silviculture practices, and tenure reform, “ I love the people in the forest industry, it has been a passion for me for a long, long time, and I will miss that, there is no doubt, but the offer of taking on a role that is much larger that gives me the opportunity to touch the economy right across the province and hopefully have a positive impact on every community in the province, is one that I couldn’t  pass up.”

Just a little smackdown for backing the wrong horse and to show him who the new boss is, perhaps?
I am not a Bell fan, particularly considering his stand on the HST,but it would have made more sense to leave him right where he was.
He is certainly not the worst forestry minister we have ever had,and at least he knows the job.
As well,Bond should consider herself lucky to be still in cabinet.
There were a few cost overruns as Transportation Minister that kind of got away on her and I would not have been suprised to see her cut.
She also backed the wrong horse.
Rustad...well,he should consider himself damn lucky to even have a job as an MLA!
Speaking of that...where IS John Rustad?
Does he ever have anything to say about anything?
Pretty close to being bang on Andy.
Whats with Blair, that is gonna be a long term trife amongst the loyal members. Is he going to flake off again if he does not get what he wants.
I agree about Blair Lekstrom,He spoke.
I could see him coming back into cabinet at some point, perhaps later on,but to award him a high profile post like Clark did right off the bat really doesn't make any sense.
It's like getting a prize for raising hell and running your mouth.
He comes back, and someone like Moira Stilwell gets nothing?
Has to be some hard feelings over that one,and it may come back to haunt her!
Suspicious at best, but considering it is really the same old Campbell crowd in different chairs,I am not suprised.
Christy Clark would have axed both Bell and Bond, however she cannot afford to piss off people in this area, especially if she is going into an early election. Thats why she kept Bell and Bond around.

After the Election depending on the outcome, you might very well see Bond and Belll on the Back Bench.

Pat can dress it up all he wants, but the bottom line is, he has been demoted.

Will Bond run in the next election??? I kind of dont think so.
Christy better be careful. Giving Kevin Deputy Minister and Finance.... Ah, that makes her just a figure head. Kevin runs the show, and she gets Camera time.

Problem is, Christy was not suppose to win, but she lucked into it. She is smart enough to know that she needs to keep her enemies closer to her than her collegues. It would not be long before, she and Kevin gets into a duel, and Kevin already has plans for the next election with a new party.
I don't think Clark was suppose to win either.
I fully agree that Falcon will be running the show.
He belongs to the upper ranks of the Liberal power brokers, and he has the corporate support.
Now he has the purse strings under his thumb.
I am betting he told Clark what he wanted and he got it.
I doubt it was any accident that not only is he still in cabinet,he is in the chair next to Clark.
We should all be very nervous about that.
Pat will be running again, more than likely. I think Shirley is OK, to hang up her boots, and call it a day, and get her life back.
I think a new party is going to form by next election, and a lot of BC Liberals are gonna follow. "BC Party". It will be right of center and Kevin Falcon being the exulted ruler.
I think we need to contact authorities, we have not heard a word out of Rustad. Hmmm, must have things in neutral and is coasting along.
Why does everyone think that Bell's new posting is a demotion? I don't see it that way. As Forests Minister he did a good job, just ask the guys working again in the bush. So now, he can expand into other industries to promote BC to other countries.
Sorry, but it looks like I have to repost this. jus cuz seems to get it ....

Posted by: gus on March 14 2011 9:32 PMI think those of you who think our local MLAs got a demotion need to do a bit of homework of what the roles actually are. Go to the full media release that is available on the government site and educate yourself a bit.

Take a look at the Cabinet Committees.

Shirley continues as vice chair, with the Minister of Finance as chair, of the Treasury Board. You also have to remember that Shirley had signaled some time ago that she wanted a less "contentious" Ministry, so she went from Education to Transportation and Infrastructure. I would not be surprised if some of her personal lifestyle choices is the reason why she got a "lateral" posting.

John Rustad? Well he did not get a Parliamentary Secretary position. He is on one committee as a backbencher.

Pat? His is probably the most interesting situation. A new Ministry, which I see as a ministry which integrates the work of a number of Ministries in government. I also happen to see it as a very important function of government. I think they chose the right person for what I think will become an important function of government, pulling everyone together to head in the same direction which will hopefully result in a different way of thinking about how to create the jobs of the next several decades and beyond.

First, he is one of only two Ministers who have two Parliamentary Secretaries working with him. Five Ministers, other than the Premier, have one and the others (10 of them) have none.

Second, he is one of 6 Ministers who is on the Priorities and Planning Committee which is the only committee chaired by the Premier. The Minister of Forests is not even on that Committee. Might give you an insight of where the new Premier is heading with Forestry. The other insight to that might be who she actually appointed as Minister of Forests. I see that Committee as the one which is like an Executive Committee which steers Cabinet and the Government. Had he stayed as Minister of Forests, he would not have been an “insider”. The Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure is also not on that committee.

Finally, Pat chairs one of the Cabinet Committees - named after his own Ministry.
In addition to three parliamentary secretaries, that Committee has 2 back benchers and 6 Ministers on it.

Boy, I would love to have that demotion. Much more exciting and I suspect it is much more exciting to Pat as well.
Posted by: gus on March 14 2011 9:40 PMHere is the list of the two Cabinet Committees I wrote about
-----------------------------------
Priorities and Planning Committee
• Premier Christy Clark (Chair)
• Hon. Rich Coleman (Vice Chair) - Minister of Energy and Mines (Minister Responsible for Housing)
• John Les – Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier
• Hon. Kevin Falcon – Minister of Finance
• Hon. Michael de Jong – Minister of Health
• Hon. George Abbott – Minister of Education
• Hon. Pat Bell - Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation
• Hon. Stephanie Cadieux – Minister Labour, Citizens’ Services and Open Government
• Ben Stewart
------------------------------------

Cabinet Committee on Jobs and Economic Growth
• Hon. Pat Bell (Chair) – Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation
• Moira Stilwell (Vice Chair) Parliamentary Secretary for Industry, Research and Innovation to the Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation
• Donna Barnett Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Economic Development to the Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation
• Hon. Blair Lekstrom - Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure
• Iain Black Parliamentary Secretary for Public Transportation to the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure
• Hon. Steve Thomson – Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations
• Hon. Rich Coleman – Minister of Energy and Mines (Minister Responsible for Housing)
• Hon. Shirley Bond – Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General
• Hon. Mary Polak – Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation
• Ralph Sultan
• John van Dongen
In my opinion, Falcon is only there to pull the right wing in.

I think Christie is capable enough to realize when she is losing control and is also probably capable enough to do something about it if she sees any signs of that.

BTW, Falcon is the Finance Minister. So WAS Hansen. Make examples of those who do not do the right thing, and the new guy will learn more quickly.

I totally agree with you gus! This could be the start of something very interesting!
The question is, are we still the golden child!
"It's like getting a prize for raising hell and running your mouth."

Contrast this with the eternal complaints of the pundits that Liberal MLAs don't speak up and always toe the line!

Here is one who DID speak up and now it's not appreciated. He raised hell and was running his mouth!

NG if you do, NG if you don't!
It is like a bad joke that Moira Stillwell
has been demoted from a post secondary education minister job in Campbell's cabinet to a secretary to Pat Bell in Clark's cabinet.

I guess Dr Stillwell's views were the reason for Campbell splitting her ministry of advanced education into two separate ministries for colleges and universities; more surprising was her being assigned to the college half and not university half by Campbell last year.

I don't blame her for not wanting to handle the universities, if she couldn't fix the deep rooted problems in the universities. But what a shame.
Bell was named yesterday as the Minister in charge of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation.

He'll always be Hamburger Pattie to me.
