Opinion250 Publisher Elaine Macdonald addresses New Caledonia Rotary Club in Prince George

The publisher of Opinion 250, Elaine Macdonald says the fastest growing news medium in the rural part of the province is Opinion 250. 

Speaking to the New Caledonia Rotary Club,  Macdonald said her internet paper has now logged more than 2.6 million page views since being launched on May 13th, 2005. “We think differently than they do in the 604 “she said, hence the reason why the internet paper is called Opinion 250. 

“It’s definitely not about Ben Meisner’s opinion" she said but rather the "over 800 people who comment on the news that is posted every day “. The commentators she added have taken on their own notoriety and people go to the site every day just to see what the various people are saying about the news. 

“80% of our audience is from Prince George “but Macdonald said the balance comes from all over the rural region stretching out to Prince Rupert and down to Williams Lake and North to Ft. Nelson. 

During the flood last winter in Hixon, people had to go door to door to alert people of the rising river because there is no foot print in the town from the traditional media , and Opinion 250 is filling that gap in many smaller areas. 

She concluded by saying that the internet is the future, quoting CNN.com Senior Vice President David Payne who says "the data is pretty clear , the broadcast news ratings chart just drops and drops and drops. For cable, it’s probably less dramatic, but it’s still true. There is  just no doubt in my mind that online usage is going to dominate the future. Whether its 20 years from now or five years from now, I don’t know. But it’s going to win in the end"
