Prince George, B.C.- A "Dust Quality Advisory" is now in place for Prince George, due to high levels of fine particulate matter, but the Ministry of the Environment says it won't likely last long.
The provincial air quality objective for fine particles, PM2.5, is 25 micrograms per cubic metre, averaged over 24 hours. The 24 hour PM2.5 rolling average was 13 µg/m3 at the Plaza 400 downtown site and 11 µg/m3 at College Heights at 8 am today.
The provincial air quality objective for coarse particles, PM10, is 50 micrograms per cubic metre, averaged over 24 hours. The 24 hour PM10 rolling average was 52 µg/m3 at the Plaza 400 downtown, 26 µg/m3 at College Heights and 37 µg/m3 at BCR at 8 am today.
Based on the air quality data, the high levels are mainly due to road dust.
Calm winds overnight as well as clear skies contributed to dust accumulating in the air shed. Winds are expected to gradually increase over the next 24 hours. Air quality is expected to be better at higher elevations. Levels should improve somewhat this afternoon but there is a risk of higher dust levels occurring again overnight.
