Prince George, B.C. - One of four science expos being held around the province this school year begins in Prince George today...
Last fall, the provincial government proclaimed the 2010-11 school year, "Year of Science" to raise awareness about the importance of science and to encourage young people to pursue careers in fields involving math, science, and engineering.
The local expo, with the theme of 'Science and the World Around Us', is a two-day opportunity to showcase some of the scientific achievement and innovation that's going on in the Prince George region.
Minister Responsible, Pat Bell, points to UNBC's new bioenergy plant as one example of how science is making a difference in Prince George. Bell is encouraging residents of all ages to come out to the free event at the Prince George Civic Centre to see how the science and technology behind forestry, mining, green energy, biofuels and transportation has made B.C.'s resource sector known worldwide.
Bell, himself, along with MLA Shirley Bond will don lab coats and safety goggles for their part in a hands-on demonstration that goes at 5pm tonight. The expo runs from 10am until 7pm today and 9:30am until 2pm tomorrow.
