Keeping Schools Drug Free

Drug Free Zones, a step in the right direction.  That's the focus of  a presentation from Lisa Martinson, the Vice Chair of the District Parent Advisory Council.

There are 4 areas  requested to be made "Drug Free Zones",  (a one thousand foot radius) around three elementary schools and one high school in Prince George.
The areas were chosen because  they had a  high concentration of  drug investigations or complaints, filed with police.

DPAC  says that  in cooperation with Crown Counsel and the RCMP, the establishment of  such zones sends a message that  "we care and are doing something about it."

DPAC says it has support from teachers Crown Counsel and the RCMP.  In asking the Board to approve the Drug Free Zones, the Council also would like the Board to ensure all schools get a clear understanding of what it means to be a Drug Free Zone, and that explanatory brochures be issued to all neighbouring residents.

Martinson says"Kids cannot learn if they are not in classes, and they cannot learn if they are high."

The Board has agreed to write a letter of support to the District Parent Advisory Council with the understanding that as the project is developed it will be brought back to the Board for  the next step.

Schools are supposed to be drug free zones already, and this proposed drig-free zone, will ensure that any creep caught selling drugs to kids, gets hit hard.

I applaud Lisa Martinson for bringing forward such an initiative. Some would say it won't do anything to stem the tide of drugs in our schools, but at least she is doing something.

Kudos to you Lisa.
ALL schools should be made "drug free zones", not just elementary schools either. It just goes to show what a crappy justice system we have when we have to make new rules to enforce the existing ones. To sell drugs is illegal, to sell drugs to kids is immoral. But, how do we get kids to stop selling those drugs?
The drug issue is such a hard one to deal with. What really makes matters tough, is when kids deal drugs to other kids. Of course, there is some scumbag adult on top of all of this, but how do we as a community address this issue?

I Have heard that the dope dealers utilize taxis as a means of transportation and as drug running vehicles, and they use the kids to move the drugs, giving them a cut of the deal. That is unless they don't sell enough, then other repercussions are felt that you and I are very unaware of.

Kids today really don't have it much easier than we think they do.
I agree with this. It's about time we did something constructive towards helping our kids stay clear of the scum who push drugs. I also think that this initiative should not be limited to a few 'trouble areas' the scourge is everywhere in the city, to greater and lesser degrees. How about some effective laws that the Police can enforce, and that will severely punish those who are caught.
