Mayor Colin Kinsley has officially declared March, Red Cross month. The Northern B.C. & Yukon Regional Red Cross made a presentation to City Council to update the City on the organizations efforts.
Public Relations rep Dena Allen, and Volunteer Debbie Byl talked of how the staff of 10, and 150 volunteers with the Northern B.C.- Yukon Region operate the largest Red Cross region in the country. The Red Cross Mission statement is to "Improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity in Canada and around the world."
Ms. Allen also thanked the City for the municipal tax exemption and the assistance from City Staff in making the Medical Equipment Loan Centre a reality (see previous story)
She told how local residents donated over $1.4 million dollars to the Prince George office for Tsunami relief, and how people of the region are more than generous with their time and dedication to volunteerism.
Ms. Allen says most people are aware of what the Red Cross does on an international scale, but many may not be aware of the community services, like the medical equipment loan service, first aid training, water safety programs, boating safety programs, violence and abuse prevention program (respectED), national homelessness initiative, and disaster services.
"From a positive point of view", said Councilor Don Zurowski, "you had a very successful fundraiser over the weekend and congratulations on the new Medical Equipment Loan Service."
Mayor Kinsley says he is very supportive of all the work the Red Cross does, and hopes they will continue with their work on boating programs "It is always a tragedy when people lose their lives because they weren't wearing a life jacket." said the Mayor.
