CNC has approved its operating budget for 2006-07 for a total of $39,785,621.00 dollars. The budget will see a 2% increase in tuition fees for the base programs and what is expected to be a net loss of about 6 faculty members from the payroll.
President Ralph Troschke says of the 24 names on the lay off notice, about six will not likely return to the college. The lay offs come from a series of occurrences he added. There has been a decline of between 10 and 12% in CNC enrollment over the past five years. There are a couple of reasons for the decline says Traschke:
1. Employment has been high, many high school graduates have been heading for the work place rather than heading off to college. That drop in enrollment he added extends to UNBC and other institutions around the province.
2. The student demographic has changed with the average age at CNC now 26, making for a smaller pool of students formerly on unemployment assisted
Asked about the cuts that are being made at CNC, Troschke said “These cuts have been made at other colleges in the past few years we have been one of the last institutions to make those adjustments.” Troschke went on to say “We know that enrollment at UNBC has been dropping in the 1st year programs.”
The International Education student’s enrollment remained the same as last yea. While costs were up, so was tuition for International students and the college will make about $92,947 dollars from its international programs.
New and expanded programs will include a seven month welding level C program, two additional electrical apprentice intakes, one additional Millwright apprentice intake, a new Machinist apprentice Program and the Planer mill program will be continued.
