The independent Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner will  re-open the case of the  death of Kevin St. Arnaud.  Kevin (shown at left) was shot by RCMP  in a field in Vanderhoof in December of 2004.  St. Arnaud was not armed.

His widow, Rebecca Gingera says  news of this new investigation is welcome "It is a good  thing, although its not  going to fix anything, still it's nice to hear that  someone thinks the case should be looked at" says Gingera.  She says she was surprised to hear the case was considered "closed" .  "You would think they would let the family know that they have closed a case " says Gingera.

After reviewing the information presented by investigators, the Crown said charges would  not be laid .  (see previous story)

There is also a Coroner's inquest slated for this case,  Rebecca understands that  because of scheduling conflicts that  won't likely take place until the fall.

By the time all the investigations are compete it will have been two  years since Kevin died.  "That's a long time " says Gingera, who  says there should be some changes to the system "Police should not be trained to aim for the body mass, they should  be trained  that if they must shoot, take out the legs,  at least that wouldn't be fatal"
