Just prior to the midnight deadline for the removal of the provincial government's billion dollars in signing incentives, the Health Employers Association of British Columbia and B.C. Nurses Union announced a four-year deal had been struck.
More than 29,000 nurses will vote on the package over the next month. B.C.'s Finance Minister, Carole Taylor, says the contract will provide long-term labour stability within the health sector.
“I want to congratulate both parties for using an innovative approach to bargaining,” said Taylor. “In 2004, the parties established Nurse Policy Discussions outside of the collective bargaining process, which allowed nurses, government and employers to discuss important non-monetary issues. As a result, both sides were able to focus on the key issues during this round of negotiations and reach an agreement without any disruption to patients. "
“This is the 50th agreement under the negotiating framework envelope,” says the finance minister.
