City Council is making some moves to explore the possibility of establishing an Urban Development Agreement.
That would be a three party deal involving the City, the Province, and the Federal Government. Such agreements are already in place in cities like Vancouver, Regina, and Winnipeg. The agreement would open the door for funding that would satisfy mutual strategies, namely community safety and downtown revitalization. City Manager George Paul points out the Vancouver agreement is aimed at revitalizing Vancouver's east side and has pumped more than $10 million dollars into those efforts.
Councilor Skakun wanted to know if we will be able to develop our own project, and Paul says yes. "It all depends on where the community wants to go, what the priorities are, the Vancouver agreement is just an example" says Paul although he says the goalsoutlined in that agreement are similar to the priorities in Prince George.
George Paul says there is no cookie cutter style of program, but it provides for the municipality to have a greater say on how some funding will be used.
Paul believes such an agreement would be a good fit with the mandate of the Partners for a Healthy Downtown.
