The "Stand Up For the North " Committee  has set two days in November as the time for a special conference on developing a plan  for the North in the wake of the pine beetle infestation.

As well as educating and informing people about the pine beetle issue and its effects on the North, the November 4th and 5th conference seeks to accomplish three objectives:

1. Develop proposals and solutions to renew and revitalize our region in ways that will benefit the people who work in the forest industry, the communities of the region, the land and forest environment itself, and the province as a whole.
2. Develop proposals and solutions that will give the people of the North more control over their future.
3. Initiate a movement of people and communities across the North to work for the implementation of these proposals and solutions once they are developed.

Leading up to the conference, meetings and other activities will be organized across the North. Peter Ewart, a spokesperson for the Committee, says that the Committee “will work with other organizations and bodies that have similar aims” and calls upon people in the region “to come together to develop proposals that will work in the interests of Northern communities.” Proposals that are generated through this process will be presented to all levels of government.

The overall guidelines for the development of proposals and solutions at the conference are as follows:

• Made-in-the-North, not Made-in-Victoria approach
• People from all sectors of the community and all political points of view invited to participate
• Needs of both large and small communities, as well as urban and rural to be taken into account
• Broad in scope and holistic, taking into account the issues of reforestation, forest policy, forest tenure, First Nations land claims and rights, retraining, safety, economic development, environment, and infrastructure (such as health, education, social services, transportation and other)
• End result to allow the region to speak with one voice
