Campbell's Plan Pays Off : One Man's Opinion

By Ben Meisner

During the first term of Premier Gordon Campbell, when asked if he would make the necessary moves to change this province, he said,  “just watch me”.  It was his standard line and he lived by it even though he dropped popularity with not only organized labour but with many others as well.

He had a plan, and a survey last week, shows Gordon Campbell has a new improved popularity and a province which is riding high on the economic wave.

Things are so good, that during the last interview Campbell did with Opinion 250 and Shaw’s channel 10, he said he couldn’t get the highway between PG and Cache Creek twinned as quickly as possible not because he wasn’t ready to get the job done, but rather he sees as a major problem trying to get enough labour in this province with the 2010 on the horizon.

He said, "Don’t worry when we get finished with the 2010, I’ll put those people to work finishing off that road."  It is the kind of commitment I have come to know from Gordon Campbell, when he says he is about to do it, there rarely (if ever) is anything standing in his way.

Now what about his future?  Another term he said, "After the 2010 I’ll start looking around to see if I want to keep up with this but I think, the next term covering the Olympics could be my last."

You can take those comments to the bank, he will live up to not only the commitment to build us a divided highway from P.G. to Vancouver, he will only be around till mid term after the next election. The public opinion surveys as they sit today suggest that no one is about to make changes.

I’m Meisner and that is one man's opinion.

Well its easy to laud Campbell for the great job he's doing. The fact is that he put it in the ear of the very people that made this province what it is today, our seniors.
every January we have to fork out $250.00 the deductable portion of drug costs which was increased from $25.00. Those of us entitled to extended benifits the deductable was also increased from $25.00 to $250.00 and our MSP payments were increased by 50 percent.
The case of the increased extended benefits and MSP preimiums is still before the courts and just recently he appealed a dicision to pay up.
And here's the part that realy ticked many off was the 2 billion dollar tax break that he gave to the rich the day after he was first elected.
So I'm crying over spilt milk but to those of us effected will need more then the Olimpics to forget the crulity of our great Mr Campell.
And thats another mans opion
As an after thought Campbell’s plan had very little to do with the improvement with the provincial economy. All politicians like to make that claim but really it has been a demand by foreign countries for our natural resources that have improved our economy. The Olympics were a given. They certainly play a large roll in the economy of the lower mainland. For the rest of the province its mere crumbs. It will probably cost the citizens of Prince George more in tax dollars then the benefits derived.
There are a lot of figures out there of the eventual cost of the Olympics. Most of them are just just wild guesses that we all have to pay for in tax dollars. There is the RAV line the sea to sky highway and a list of other projects to numerous to mention all for the Olympics. And now Mr Campbell gives us a hint he will not be around after the big event.
What he’s actually saying is I don’t want to be around for the meltdown which is sure to come. The pine beetle event should be in full swing by 2010. Then there will be the drain on the income of tax payers up to the Olympics with the increase of ordinary commodities like food and housing. Here in Prince George we are already starting to pay with an increase in taxes to pay for the airy fairy ideas of how can we make a few bucks from the Olympics.
I wonder why Campbell isn’t going to four lane Highway 97 so that we could get to the lower mainland faster to spend our money. Maybe he knows something we don’t and that is there will be no money left after the Olympics for Highway 97.
Have a nice day.
Facts are Gordon Campbell does not keep his word where it counts.

He has now put off implimenting the BCSTV system that was voted in with an overwhelming majority of 59.8% of British Columbians and 98% of BC ridings saying in the last election this is how they wish to chose our government. Campbell has ignored the majority and put his main platform promise off until after he is gone as BC Premier.

Everything else is just a government that is not legitimate come 2009 considering the voted will of the citizens of BC in 2005. I find that unacceptable and unconstitutional and will not vote liberal as a result unless the majority will in this province is respected.
The BCSTV will probably be on the Ballot in the next election, hopefully enough people will understand this system by then to ensure that it does not pass. This is the most convoluted, witless, way to elect a Government that has ever been engineered. If you can track your vote under this system you can find that your vote has been transferred to some dude that you would never ever vote for, and this dude might in fact end up in Government, while under the first past the post system he wouldnt stand a chance. BCSTV is a good system for losing or lost political parties to weasel their way into Government, and after being **so-called** elected they have no responsibility to any party, and supposedly are responsible to the Voters in the Ridings. It will be a sad day indeed if we every get to the point where we use this system.

The majoritys quoted are the percentages of people who actually voted. This of course does not represent the Majority of the people in the Province, most of who dont vote now, and surely they and a lot more people would not vote under the BCSTV System.
**Let sleeping dogs lie** The old system has served us well over the years, and will continue to do so.
Right on Kimbo. That waste of space and his government has cost this pensioner about $1300 a year with his cutbacks. Twinning the 97? What a joke. Pave 4 or 5 kms a year and call it the Cariboo Connector while the Lower rainland gets everything. I will definitely not be voting for Gordo and his goons anytimre in the near future. That's this pensioner's opinion.
Palopu you have it all wrong. You don't impower a guy you never intended but actual the complete oposite.

Currently your being forced to pick the best of two or three evils, and if you don't vote for the front runner your vote is wasted.

Under STV if there is not a majority 50%+1, than and only then, does the 2nd, 3rd and 4th choices start to come into effect. If your vote did not go to one of the top three candidates than those candidates are eliminate and your second choice becomes your vote. Thus your vote still counts until such time as your vote is either for a majority or a minority elected representative. In no way under the STV can someone win an election with a minority of the vote.

The BCSTV is a little different in that it is made up of multiseat ridings with greater preference for the voter.

This system has three clear benefits:

#1 It infranchises everyones vote so that all votes count. This would increase voter turnout and make voting more relevant and elections more credible.

#2 It empowers the voters to take control of the agenda through the power to vote around party hack candidates that are agents of their party and not their constituents.

#3 It allows people to vote in favour of something, rather than against something like the current politics of fear and smear first past the post. This again takes the power from the party hacks and favours the individuals with ideas or honesty.

The current system puts in power a person or party whom a majority never even voted for and empowers large corporations. The current system also empowers unions and corporation financed elections that make or break candidates through party favors and politics of fear first past the post.

They say that the 20th century saw the rise of two powerful political movements: the rise of democracy, and the rise of corporate multinationalism. In the 21st century one is sure to dominate over the other.

You can vote your choice for big money financed party interference in democracy, or you can vote for democracy.

The argument should not be over which system enfranchises the voter and is a more legitimate reflection of citizen preference because BCSTV wins that argument hands down.

The argument should be how do we ensure the system accurately counts the vote and how can you as a voter ensure your vote was counted correctly?

The globablists that control our parties have a plan B if they lose the referendum. Their plan B is to have a company like Diabold build the systems that count the votes and then allocate accordingly through electronic interception and manipulation with programing codes.

The solution is an approved voter getting a random ballot that has two sides to the ballot with matching bar codes (bar codes only match two-too-a-ballot and have no other connection to the voter). One bar code goes to the ballot count, and the other bar code is saved for audit purposes should a citizen question the vote count. All results as per bar code numbers could then be posted instantainiously on the internet for self varification of the vote count including your own ballot.
Smoke and mirrors as the old saying goes. We will never see the Highway 97 four laned, (an election ploy)there is no money for the north money only for the rich in Whistler.
Yeah, I am pining for the good old days of the 1990s, when the NDP doubled the debt of the province, built useless fast ferries, deceptive fudgit budgets, had 4 premiers in 10 years, and mismanaged the province until it slipped form #1 to number #10 in Canada, while all the rest of Canada was experiencing steady positive growth!

And, yes: Highway 97 will be four laned, the same highway that didn't
have ANY proper maintenance during the glorious social democratic years.

How soon everyone forgets!
To Palopu: "The Old System has served us well over the years".

Well, I have to disagree with that comment. The situation we are dealing with today, that you are complaining about is the result of decisions your friends made yesterday. I don't want more of that type of governance. Thank you very much. Chester
To Palopu: "The Old System has served us well over the years".

Well, I have to disagree because all we have had is the political polarization into two extremely confrontational camps.

Therefore, voter disillusionment is at an all-time high.

BCSTV may introduce splinter groups into the legislature and these small groups may acquire extraordinary power by the necessity to form a coalition in order to have a functioning government.

What results from deal making with a few (potentially extreme) MLAs may be much worse than what we have had to endure so far.

BCSTV may lead to a more cooperative and wiser group of MLAs or it may result in paralysis.

We don't always manage to elect MLAs who have our interests at heart rather than their own.
