UNBC professor DR. Heather Smith has received the country’s most prestigious university teaching award. Smith, an International Studies professor, has been with UNBC since its opening and is the first there to receive the 3M Teaching Fellowship award.

“As an academic, I’m trained to have my head in the classroom, but genuine teaching also requires that my heart is there as well,” says Smith, who has recently accepted the position of Professional Development Coordination with the UNBC Centre for Teaching and Learning. Smith will continue to teach and also to serve as the Chair of the International Studies program.

The ten recipients of the 2006 3M Teaching Fellowship awards will be recognized tonight at a banquet in Toronto and will be profiled in the July 19th issue of Maclean’s magazine.
